LANDOVER, Md. (CBSDC) - The Washington Redskins want their Prince George?s County neighbors to do more gambling, according to one team executive.
Redskins president of business operations Dennis Greene formally threw the organization?s support behind a ?Yes? vote to Question 7 from Maryland voters in the November election, which would bring a new casino ? the sixth in the state ? to Prince George?s County.
It was, if nothing else a peculiar stance for an NFL franchise to take considering the league prohibits its players, coaches and employees from partaking in many forms of gambling.
But Greene says it?s the franchise?s obligation to champion a ?Yes? vote for a referendum which would bring table games to FedEx Field?s backyard.
?As members of the Prince George?s County business community, we see it as our obligation to speak out in support of major economic development initiatives,? Green stated. ?We believe Question 7 represents a tremendous opportunity ? to create thousands of good-paying jobs, increase funding for public schools, and help provide dollars for other critical state and local government services.
Should the Yes vote be the ruling majority in November, the leading candidates for a new casino site ? Rosecroft Raceway and National Harbor ? are each within 20 miles of the football team?s game day home in Landover.
Despite the verbal backing of a $1.5 billion organization, gambling expansion still faces stiff financial competition.
In an even stranger twist, Penn National Gaming has spent more than $18 million in advertising against the expanded gambling ballot.
Aside from Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races in West Virginia, Penn National also owns Rosecroft ? one of the abovementioned candidates of a new potential casino.
The company would rather spend money denying competitors the chance at a new location at National Harbor, than fighting for a slim opportunity at earning their own windfall at Rosecroft.
With Prince George?s County Executive Rushern Baker III having publicly voiced his preference for the Potomac River site, Penn National execs realize the house just isn?t in their favor.
