No Plans To Bring Volkswagen Taigun to U.S.

Just the Facts:
  • There are no plans to import a production version of the Volkswagen Taigun to the U.S., Edmunds has learned.
  • The baby SUV concept based on Volkswagen's Up! city car was unveiled at the 2012 Sao Paulo Auto Show.
  • Taigun means "thundering herd" in Japanese.

SAO PAULO, Brazil ? There are no plans to import a production version of the Volkswagen Taigun to the U.S., Edmunds has learned, even though the tiny SUV is likely to be produced in 2015.

The baby SUV concept based on Volkswagen's Up! city car was unveiled at the 2012 Sao Paulo Auto Show.

Taigun means "thundering herd" in Japanese.

At 152 inches long, the diminutive, four-passenger Taigun is 22 inches shorter than the Volkswagen Tiguan, which is already one of the smallest SUVs offered in the U.S.

The Taigun uses a 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine producing 108 horsepower. It propels the Taigun to 62 mph in 9.2 seconds and has a top speed of 115 mph. Although it has the proportions, silhouette and ground clearance of an SUV in miniature, the Taigun will only be offered in front-wheel-drive form with a six-speed manual transmission.

What off-roading capabilities it has will be afforded by its ground clearance and ESP anti-skid control systems. Intended as an urban SUV, the Taigun will compete with Ford's small Brazilian EcoSport SUV and the larger Renault Duster.

This being a concept there are some features unlikely to make it to the showroom version, including a Range Rover-style split tailgate, the vents in the hood and the spotlights in the roof rails. But otherwise this sharply styled, well-proportioned baby SUV is likely to look fairly similar to this concept. Volkswagen said in an official statement that "the prospects for the Taigun being seen at VW dealers are quite high ? what is crucial here is the overall response of the public to this concept."

Edmunds says: Global demand for SUVs seems insatiable ? they're simply scaled to suit their markets. Which means no Taigun for the U.S., but it's likely to appear elsewhere.
