iPad Still Dominates with 81% of Market (NewsFactor)

The Tab has just a tad of the market, the PlayBook isn't much of a player, and it's touch-and-go for the TouchPad.

But Apple's iPad is still going strong, dominating North American tablet computer sales with a solid 81 percent share of consumers in the second quarter, according to a new report that comes a little more than 18 months after its unveiling by then-CEO Steve Jobs sparked a revolution in media consumption and mobile Internet browsing.

Tight Grip

Boston-based Strategy Analytics said Apple controls four-fifths of the tablet market, "a tight grip that Amazon and others will find difficult, but not impossible to break."

The report comes as Amazon is believed to be on the verge of launching the Kindle Fire, an upgraded version of its successful e-reader that will be able to access magazines and newspapers, possibly powered by Google's Android operating system. The price is believed to be in the $300 range, cheaper than Apple's lowest priced, 16-gigabyte iPad at $499. A launch event is scheduled Wednesday in New York.

And on Monday, Research In Motion lowered the price of its QNX-powered PlayBook tablet to $249 for its 16 GB model. New tablets, mostly Android-based, seem to be hitting the market on a regular basis, attempting to steal the iPad's thunder.

"Apple's share in North America was a strong 81 percent in Q2 2011, and the combined sales of mega-vendors like Motorola and Samsung, as well as emerging Asian vendors like Asus and HTC, have been unable to dislodge Apple from a strong No. 1 spot," said Strategy Analytics senior analyst Alex Spektor.

Strategy Analytics did not release to the press figures for other regions of the world, including Western Europe, Asia Pacific, Central and Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East from its report, "Global Tablet Vendor Market Share by Region: Q2 2011." Those details are in the full report the firm sells to its clients, including manufacturers, wireless carriers and others.

But Strategy Analytics said the iPad dominates every major region, particularly North America because its brand and distribution networks are best established here. Meanwhile, it said, "HTC's tablet strategy struggled to make an impact in Western Europe and elsewhere."

What's Next?

Apple released the second incarnation of the iPad in March, making the device slimmer and lighter, with a faster dual-core A5 processor and front and back cameras. The Wall Street Journal reported that the iPad 3 is likely to debut early next year.

So what could Apple add to the device to keep it competitive?

"There's only so much they can add to it now," Spektor said. "Apple has succeeded in the laptop and music player spaces by offering devices at different price points and with varied capabilities, to target consumers of different budgets and needs. Perhaps some future iPad growth can come from further segmentation beyond different memory capacities."

(AP) ? A Saudi woman was sentenced Tuesday to be lashed 10 times with a whip for defying the kingdom's prohibition on female drivers, the first time a legal punishment has been handed down for a violation of the longtime ban in the ultraconservative Muslim nation.

Normally, police just stop female drivers, question them and let them go after they sign a pledge not to drive again. But dozens of women have continued to take to the roads since June in a campaign to break the taboo.

Making Tuesday's sentence all the more upsetting to activists is that it came just two days after King Abdullah promised to protect women's rights and decreed that women would be allowed to participate in municipal elections in 2015. Abdullah also promised to appoint women to a currently all-male advisory body known as the Shura Council.

The mixed signals highlight the challenge for Abdullah, known as a reformer, in pushing gently for change without antagonizing the powerful clergy and a conservative segment of the population.

Abdullah said he had the backing of the official clerical council. But activists saw Tuesday's sentencing as a retaliation of sorts from the hard-line Saudi religious establishment that controls the courts and oversees the intrusive religious police.

"Our king doesn't deserve that," said Sohila Zein el-Abydeen, a prominent female member of the governmental National Society for Human Rights. She burst into tears in a phone interview and said, "The verdict is shocking to me, but we were expecting this kind of reaction."

The driver, Shaima Jastaina, in her 30s, was found guilty of driving without permission, activist Samar Badawi said. The punishment is usually carried out within a month. It was not possible to reach Jastaina, but Badawi, in touch with Jastaina's family, said she appealed the verdict.

Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world that bans women ? both Saudi and foreign ? from driving. The prohibition forces families to hire live-in drivers, and those who cannot afford the $300 to $400 a month for a driver must rely on male relatives to drive them to work, school, shopping or the doctor.

There are no written laws that restrict women from driving. Rather, the ban is rooted in conservative traditions and religious views that hold giving freedom of movement to women would make them vulnerable to sins.

Activists say the religious justification is irrelevant.

"How come women get flogged for driving while the maximum penalty for a traffic violation is a fine, not lashes?" Zein el-Abydeen said. "Even the Prophet (Muhammad's) wives were riding camels and horses because these were the only means of transportation."

Since June, dozens of women have led a campaign to try to break the taboo and impose a new status quo. The campaign's founder, Manal al-Sherif, who posted a video of herself driving on Facebook, was detained for more than 10 days. She was released after signing a pledge not to drive or speak to media.

Since then, women have been appearing in the streets driving their cars once or twice a week.

Until Tuesday, none had been sentenced by the courts. But recently, several women have been summoned for questioning by the prosecutor general and referred to trial.

One of them, housewife Najalaa al-Harriri, drove only two times, not out of defiance, but out of need, she says.

"I don't have a driver. I needed to drop my son off at school and pick up my daughter from work," she said over the phone from the western port city of Jeddah.

"The day the king gave his speech, I was sitting at the prosecutor's office and was asked why I needed to drive, how many times I drove and where," she said. She is to stand trial in a month.

After the king's announcement about voting rights for women, Saudi Arabia's Grand Mufti Abdel Aziz Al Sheik blessed the move and said, "It's for women's good."

Al-Harriri, who is one of the founders of a women's rights campaign called "My Right My Dignity," said, "It is strange that I was questioned at a time the mufti himself blessed the king's move."

Asked if the sentencing will stop women from driving, Maha al-Qahtani, another female activist, said, "This is our right, whether they like it or not."

Jury: Muslim students guilty of disrupting speech

Jurors found 10 Muslim students guilty Friday of disrupting a lecture by the Israeli ambassador at a California university in a case that stoked a spirited debate about free speech.

The defendants were sentenced to 56 hours of community service and three years of informal probation.

Orange County Superior Court Judge Peter J. Wilson said the incident did not merit jail time and he added that the probation period would be reduced to one year if the community service is completed by the end of January 2012.

Jurors delivered the verdicts in the case involving a speech by Ambassador Michael Oren in February 2010 at the University of California, Irvine.

The students were also convicted of conspiring to disrupt Oren's speech.

They were charged with misdemeanor counts after standing up, one by one, and shouting prepared statements at Oren such as "propagating murder is not an expression of free speech."

About 150 people, including relatives and supporters of the students and Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas, attended the verdict. Some community members gasped and started crying when the verdict was read and about a dozen of them walked out.

The students showed little reaction but later huddled with their attorneys and shared hugs with family and friends.

Shakeel Syed of the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California said he was shocked.

"This is yet another reaffirmation that Islamophobia is intensely and extensively alive and thriving in Orange County," he said. "I believe this will be used as precedent now to suppress speech and dissent throughout the country. This is the beginning of the death of democracy."

Prosecutors said the students broke the law by interrupting Oren's speech on U.S.-Israel relations and cutting short the program, despite calls to behave from campus officials. Defense attorneys argued the students had a right to protest.

Nearly 200 people packed the courtroom to hear closing arguments at the trial that some community members called a waste of taxpayers' money and an effort to single out the defendants because they are Muslim.

Prosecutor Dan Wagner told jurors the students acted as censors to block the free flow of ideas and infringed upon the rights of 700 people who had gone to the Irvine campus to hear Oren.

Wagner showed video footage of university officials pleading with students to behave, but they kept interrupting the lecture. Wagner also showed emails sent among members of UC Irvine's Muslim Student Union planning the disruption and calculating who was willing to get arrested.

Defense attorneys countered there were no hard rules for the speech, and the students might have been discourteous but didn't break the law.

Lawyer Reem Salahi, who represents two of the defendants, said the demonstration was modeled after a series of protests at UC Irvine and elsewhere in which students shouted at lecturers but weren't arrested.

She said the students never intended to halt Oren's speech entirely but wanted to express their views on the Israeli government's actions in Gaza.

During the case, attorneys showed dueling pie charts breaking down how much time the students demonstrated, how long their supporters cheered and how much time Oren spoke. The evidence was intended to show whether the meeting suffered a significant disruption.

Attorneys for the students ? who attended UC Irvine and nearby University of California, Riverside ? argued before the trial that charges should never have been filed and that the issue was already handled on campus.

In 2010, the students were cited, released and disciplined at UC Irvine, which revoked the Muslim Student Union's charter for a quarter and placed it on two years of probation.

Earlier this year, District Attorney Tony Rackauckas filed criminal charges against 11 students, prompting an outcry from the American Civil Liberties Union and a host of Jewish, Muslim and campus groups. Charges against one defendant later were dropped.

Forex Question by aa: How do I pay income tax on ForEx earnings?
This is my first time for paying income tax on ForEx, being a US citizen i believe i have to pay tax on forex income, but i have no clue what do i have to do for that. Thanks for your help.

Best answer:

Answer by tyler
Normally you need to file them as capital gains or losses (like you would with stocks or options).

But you can make a special election that will allow you to split them as 60% long terms capital gains and 40% regular income, which is advantageous for tax purposes since long term capital gains rates are lower.

Q&A: Thinking about becoming an university ... - Education Reference

Question by Zurensy: Thinking about becoming an university professor?
Okay, I?m in 7th grade, I make decent grades like high 80?s and 90?s.
I was thinking of becoming a professor on either electronics, arts, or in history.
I know art is out because of how low paying job it is and how hard it is to get job.
Now what are my better chances? Electronics or History?
Also what do I have to do to become a professor and I might go for Early collage High School later on when I graduate from Middle School.

Best answer:

Answer by Angel1234
First, you will need to get good grades, and go to undergraduate college. It is important you do very well in undergrad because you need to get into the best graduate school you can. The more prestigious your grad school is the better chances you will get hired. Also, you will need to conduct as much research as possible in order to make your self wanted by a university.

I think electronics would be better to go into as it is constantly changing and is a relatively new field.

The vast majority of people will have nothing to say really. As an online marketing genius (that?s you), you can offer to assist a small business owner with the task of setting up an autoresponder on their website. You can set up an autoresponder service through Aweber for about $19 per month. However, many people will charge a small business $500 to add this to their website. Thankfully, it is very easy to do so!

Now, you also want to assist the owner in coming up with a good reason for people to sign up to their email list. For instance, they may want to hire you to write a short report that they can give away for free to get people to sign up for the list. You can even set up a series of email responses that will automatically go out to the person when they sign up for the list.

For instance, if it is a home decorator, you could set up a 10 part series about how to decorate your home using only thrift store items or something else that would be interesting to that target market.

Having an autoresponder will greatly increase profits for many businesses, yet they often do not even know that they are missing out on so many opportunities. You can ride in on your white horse and save them!

Obama, with Netanyahu: Peace cannot be imposed

(AP) ? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is thanking President Barack Obama for endorsing direct talks with Palestinians and speaking out against any United Nations bid to declare a Palestinian state on its own.

With Obama at his side, Netanyahu said Wednesday the Palestinian bid to appeal directly to the U.N. is a short cut that "will not succeed."

He was echoing an appeal that Obama had made moments earlier to world leaders gathered at the U.N. General Assembly. Netanyahu lauded Obama for speaking up on principle.

Obama and Netanyahu spoke at the start of a meeting the two leaders had on the sidelines of the U.N session.

Obama reiterated that peace cannot be imposed on the parties and that they must negotiate.

WASHINGTON ? President Obama isn?t leaving a single couch cushion unturned in his effort to lower the deficit. A new proposal by the White House would allow collectors pursuing a government-backed debt ? which includes most mortgages, unpaid taxes and federal loans ? to contact people via their cellphones, in an effort to secure every last nickel and dime from taxpayers.

On page 28 of the president?s deficit-reduction plan released Monday, federal agencies would be allowed to call people?s cellphones to collect debts ? an attempt to reach the increasing number of Americans who are ditching landlines for mobile phones:

Allow agencies to contact delinquent debtors via their cellular phones. The Administration also proposes to amend the Communications Act of 1934 to facilitate collection of debts owed to or guaranteed by the Federal Government, by facilitating contact of delinquent debtors who are most readily reached on their cell phones. This provision is expected to provide substantial increases in collections, particularly as an increasing share of households no longer have landlines and rely instead on cell phones.

Kenneth Baer, spokesman for the Office of Management and Budget, said there would be no intrusion into people?s cellphones.

?This proposal merely reflects the fact that more and more people rely solely on a mobile phone for their voice communications, and allows debt collectors to call them on these numbers,? he said.

Debt collection, however, is a touchy subject, and one that typically leads to a high number of complaints on the Federal Trade Commission?s website.

Tena Friery is research director at the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting the privacy of American consumers. She said that if the new regulations are not written correctly, there could be the ?potential for a lot of abuse,? such as calls accidentally going to people?s employers or relatives.

?One of the common problems we hear regarding debt collectors is that the debt collector is calling the wrong number,? she said. ?Cellphone numbers tend to change more than landline numbers, as people move from place to place or plan to plan. This can be quite annoying for people to receive repeated calls from a debt collector about a debt that?s not even theirs, about someone they don?t even know.?

Another common complaint about receiving calls on cellphones is that the individual may have to pay extra to receive the call.

Currently, private debt-collection agencies are not allowed to use auto-dialers to call people?s cellphones. These devices make it so that the caller doesn?t have to manually punch in the number. When there?s a busy signal or wrong number, the auto-dialer automatically moves on to the next number.

The deficit-reduction plan doesn?t specify whether federal agencies would be able to use auto-dialing, or whether they would have to manually call individuals to pay up.

Mark Schiffman is the director of public affairs at ACA International, the trade association of third-party debt collection businesses. He said cellphone restrictions make it incredibly tough for companies to collect unpaid debts.

?With more folks going to cellphone only, how do you reach out to them to collect debts that they might owe? Current law, at least as it represents the private sector, prohibits the use of an auto-dialer to make the call to someone on their cell phone,? he said.

?So the first question to the federal government is: Are they subject to the same provision? Because in many of these instances, the government is looking to private firms to do this work for them. They outsource to our members, which are private third-party debt collection firms who go about the business of collecting. But under current law, you can contact somebody on a cellphone, but you have to do it manually.?

He added that the new rules would undoubtedly increase revenue for the federal government, since it would be able to reach more people to pay up.

?Consumers are more and more indicating how they want to be contacted, and more and more they?re indicating cellphones versus landlines versus direct mail,? he said. ?And so, not being able to contact a good portion of folks on their cellphone would limit how many people you?re reaching. Therefore, the simple math is if we can connect with more people, we obviously can potentially have a better success rate.?

DDCA now comes down hard on three erring u-14 cricketers

New Delhi, Sep 17

The Delhi District and Cricket Association (DDCA) Saturday said three under-14 players, who were found guilty of misbehaving with an airhostess, have been warned and were also dropped for two matches in the ongoing Dhruv Pandove North Zone Championship in Srinagar.

The DDCA, instead of taking any action against the players, Friday called back coach Raju Tandon and assistant coach Randhir Singh, who had slapped the boys and made them apologise to the lady.

But Saturday the DDCA decided to crack the whip on the cricketers as well.

"The players have been warned and we have also informed their parents. We will not tolerate indiscipline in the sport. The players have also been dropped for today's (Saturday's) match and the next game as well," said DDCA secretary general S.P. Bansal.

Asked why did they take action against the coaches instead of the players, Bansal said: "The coaches could have handled the issue in a better way. We are not trying to protect the players."

Hiring A DUI Lawyer In Indianapolis To Resolve Traffic-Related ...

Accidents associated with drug and drunk driving are claiming the lives of thousands of Americans each year. The growing number of death tolls of driving under the influence made the Federal law strengthen their stand against it by giving penalties with varying degrees of weight depending on the damage. When caught in this kind of trouble, calling for a DUI lawyer Indianapolis would be helpful.

In every state, there are varying rules on intoxicated driving. In Indiana, the penalty of violating the rule ranges from paying a fine to mandatory community service and imprisonment. Having changed with the said case can be stressful, but seeking an attorney could help.

In Indiana?s capital city, the license from the driver is taken from him by the police officer. His license is not yet suspended, but he is expected to request a hearing ten days after the license was taken by police. As soon as the driver decides to request for a hearing, he would be needing the help of an attorney.

In seeking legal services of an attorney, one should be critical enough to tell if he is doing any good with the case. Identifying the attitudes of a good accident attorney can help.

Availing the services of an accident attorney would mean another cost. Service fee could be expensive and non-negotiable, but if the services would mean someone?s freedom, cost should be the last thing on a client?s mind.

Reasonable attorneys will ask the client to keep a documentation or a diary of what had happened that day. Legal documents such as medical records stating if the driver was drunk in time of the accident or not are also helpful pieces of information. A good attorney is honest to his client about the situation of the case and would want if his client will do the same.

Finding a DUI lawyer Indianapolis can be of great help for those who are charged with driving under the influence in Indiana. However, it is still best to follow traffic rules to avoid any legal hassle. Read more about: dui lawyer Indianapolis

Can somebody teach substantial school when they have a ...

Query by N B: Can a person teach substantial school when they have a psychology or social science degree?
I know someone who teaches, and they have a human resources degree. Is it just due to the fact the schools are so challenging up for teachers? I would enjoy to educate, so I?m questioning if a Psychology or Social Science degree would allow me to do that.
If an individual can substitute with a non-standard degree, can that function into full-time teaching?

Flesh-Eating Bacteria's Rise Tied to Antibiotic Cream (LiveScience.com)

After getting a cut, many Americans will reach for a tube of over-the-counter antibiotic cream to ward off infection. But that widespread habit, a new paper suggests, may be contributing to the rise of one of the most concerning strains of drug-resistant bacteria.

Japanese researchers looked at 261 samples of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), including 21 samples of the USA300 strain, a type of MRSA that has gained attention for its spread, its frequent presence in the community as well as the hospital, and its link to necrotizing fasciitis, also known as flesh-eating disease.

They found that while other MRSA strains were somewhat susceptible to some combination of the antibiotics bacitracin and neomycin ? which are typically found in over-the-counter creams ? only the USA300 strains were resistant to both. The authors said this may mean that overexposure to those antibiotics is what led to USA300's resistance.

"People should understand that triple antibiotic [ointment] is not almighty, and avoid preventive or excessive use of this ointment," said study author Masahiro Suzuki, a bacteriologist at the Aichi Prefectural Institute of Public Health in Nagoya, Japan.

How the USA300 strain arose

The origin of the USA300 strain has remained unknown, in part because, unlike other MRSA strains, it appears to have evolved outside of hospitals.

"Over the past decade or so, it's really emerged as the leading cause of skin and soft tissue infections in the community," said Dr. Henry Blumberg, a professor of infectious disease at Emory University who has studied USA300 at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

While other antibiotic-resistant bacteria arose in hospitals, where antibiotic use is common, and then spread out into communities, USA300 was first found in community infections, and spread from there.

"Now it's causing hospital infections," he said. "Now the lines are a little more blurry between the community and hospital."

Because USA300 is in the community, a number of groups are particularly susceptible to the strain, including children, gay men, prison inmates, military recruits, tattoo recipients and athletes, the study said.

But Blumberg said, "I think we're beyond that. These groups may have higher risk, but these things spread throughout the population."

Suzuki similarly told MyHealthNewsDaily that "all USA residents have a risk for USA300 infections anytime and anywhere, and should be careful to keep cuts and scrapes clean and covered, avoid contact with other persons' infected skin, wash hands frequently, avoid sharing personal items to minimize risk of infection."

Are antibiotic creams to blame?

While he agreed the bacteria are a threat, Blumberg said he was somewhat skeptical of the authors' hypothesis that over-the-counter ointments are driving the presence of USA300.

"They have a theory that use of topical, over-the-counter creams and antibiotics select this USA300 clone and that's why it's emerged," Blumberg said. "They haven't proved it."

Blumberg said that he is hesitant about the theory because "from my experience, most of the patients we see haven't used topical antibiotics." But, he said, "I think it's an interesting theory. It would be interesting to see if this was widespread in a bigger collection of USA300 isolates."

While USA300 is resistant to a number of drugs, it remains treatable ??for now.

"In point of drug resistance, USA300 is not dangerous," Suzuki?said, "because most USA300 strains are susceptible to not only [the antibiotic vancomycin] or other anti-MRSA agents but also clindamycin, aminoglycosides or sometimes quinolone. However, I'm afraid that USA300 [will acquire] resistance to other antimicrobial agents in the future, because USA300 now caused not only community-associated but healthcare-associated infections."

While most MRSA cases can still be treated from a range of antibiotics, that may not always be the case, as the strains develop resistance over time.

"It's kind of like an arms race, and the bugs are winning," Blumberg said. "If you look at the number of new antibiotics that are being developed in the pipeline, it's very limited."

"We're at the point where we're starting to see organisms that are resistant to every antibiotic we have, and we're not going to get a lot of new ammunition," he said. "I don't think the public and policy makers are really aware ??I don't think people are aware of how bad the situation is with multi-drug resistant organisms. We can't treat people because the organisms have become resistant to everything."

The study appears in the October issue of the CDC's journal Emerging Infectious Diseases.

Winehouse's dad says he thinks seizure killed her

(AP) ? Amy Winehouse's father says he believes she died after suffering a seizure related to alcohol detoxification and "there was nobody there to rescue her."

The soul diva, who had fought drug and alcohol problems for years, was found dead in bed at her London home on July 23. Her family says toxicology reports indicated there was alcohol in her bloodstream but it was unclear whether this had contributed to her death at age 27.

Mitch Winehouse said Friday during a taping of Anderson Cooper's new syndicated talk show that traces of the prescription drug Librium, which is used to fight anxiety and withdrawal symptoms of alcoholism, were found in her body.

"Everything Amy did, she did to excess," he said on the show, which is to air as Cooper's debut Monday. "She drank to excess and did detox to excess."

He said he regretted that his daughter ? whose most famous song, "Rehab," has her answering "no, no, no" when told to go to rehab ? was trying to kick her alcoholism without a doctor's help. He said "the periods of abstinence were becoming longer, and the periods of drinking were becoming shorter. It was heading in the right direction."

The singer, whose other hits include "Tears Dry on Their Own," had suffered seizures during this period and would lose consciousness. Her father admitted he was speculating that this happened on the morning she died and said he should find out more conclusively how she died when a full inquest into her death begins next month.

Years earlier, when Amy Winehouse was on harder drugs including heroin and cocaine, her father said, he would not have been surprised if she had died.

Mitch Winehouse, who is starting his own singing career, was in New York when his daughter's security guard called him in July. Hearing the distraught tone of the security guard's voice, the father said his first words were, "Is she dead?"

Amy Winehouse's breakthrough "Back to Black" album was recently certified as the best-selling disc in Britain so far during the 21st century. The updated take on old-time soul also was responsible for five Grammy Awards.

"When she wasn't drinking," her father said, "she was absolutely on top of the world."

He occasionally dabbed tears from his eyes as Cooper's show ran video clips of her. He said he was comforted by the outpouring of support from her fans. Her mother, Janis Winehouse, said she's had people approach her to thank her for having the singer.

Mitch Winehouse said he blamed the singer's ex-husband, a music industry hanger-on, for introducing her to hard drugs but did not blame him for her death. He said she had not taken drugs since December 2008.

Amy Winehouse's boyfriend at the time of her death, Reg Traviss, said they had spent a quiet evening looking at pictures and watching DVDs two days before she died. They were looking forward to attending a friend's wedding in a few days and were planning a trip to St. Lucia around her Sept. 14 birthday.

He said he struggled to find the right moments to talk to his girlfriend about her drinking without seeming as though he was nagging.

"She was a really clever girl," Traviss said. "She knew what she was doing. I would sometimes choose my moments when there was something that was needed to be said."

Winehouse's family has set up a foundation to raise money to help people beat alcohol and drug addiction. Her father met with British political leaders to seek backing for setting up a drug rehab center in her name.

The foundation officially starts operation next week, and her father indicated that was why he was coming forth to do interviews about her.

Cooper's program donated $50,000 to the foundation, although spokeswoman Laura Mandel said the donation was made after the interview was set up and the booking wasn't contingent upon giving the foundation money.

Amy Winehouse's stepmother and aunt also appeared on Cooper's show.

Results implicate pathways not previously associated with blood pressure as targets for new therapies

A new report from scientists at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and their colleagues in centers around the world finds that common variants in 28 regions of DNA are associated with blood pressure in human patients. Of the identified regions, most were completely unsuspected, although some harbor genes suspected of influencing blood pressure based on animal studies. In the study receiving advance online publication in Nature, members of the International Consortium for Blood Pressure Genome-Wide Association Studies (ICBP-GWAS) analyzed genetic data from over 275,000 individuals from around the world. They also identified for the first time the involvement of an important physiologic pathway in blood pressure control, potentially leading to a totally new class of hypertension drugs.

"Identifying these novel pathways expands our current understanding of the determinants of blood pressure and highlights potential targets for new drugs to treat and prevent cardiovascular complications," says Christopher Newton-Cheh, MD, MPH, of the MGH Center for Human Genetic Research and the Cardiovascular Research Center, co-chair of the ICBP-GWAS Steering Committee and a senior and corresponding author on the Nature paper.

It is well known that hypertension can run in families and that some rare genetic syndromes raise blood pressure, but identifying genes associated with the common form of hypertension has been challenging. To get a study sample large enough to detect variants with modest effects, ICBP-GWAS researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 30 genome-wide association studies that included measurements of participants' blood pressures. Analysis of 2.5 million DNA sequence variants in more than 69,000 individuals of European ancestry identified several chromosomal regions where genes influencing blood pressure appeared to be located. To confirm the results of the first-stage analysis, the researchers genotyped the strongest variants in more than 133,000 additional individuals of European descent. Combining the results identified 28 gene regions associated with both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, of which 16 were novel. A second paper from the consortium also receiving online publication today in Nature Genetics, identified six additional novel variants..

Some of the new variants were already known to cause other diseases. "We were quite astonished to see that two common variants known for decades to cause hemochromatosis an iron overload condition that affects as many as 1 in 300 Americans were also associated with higher blood pressure," says Newton-Cheh. "The hemochromatosis genes are part of a physiologic pathway that is also involved in pulmonary hypertension, but this finding opens our eyes to its potential involvement in systemic hypertension."

To test whether the blood pressure variants identified in Europeans were associated with blood pressure in other ethnicities, the consortium genotyped almost 74,000 individuals of either East Asian, South Asian or African ancestries. Genetic risk scores incorporating all identified variants were strongly associated with blood pressure levels in each of those groups and also with the risk of stroke and coronary heart disease. "Seeing that the blood pressure variants in aggregate lead to stroke and heart attack was perhaps not surprising, given the evidence that blood pressure treatment lowers these risks," said Newton-Cheh.

But the most important finding may be identification of a new pathway central to blood pressure regulation. Three of the 28 blood-pressure-associated regions include genes that are part of a pathway called the cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) system, which is involved in the relaxation of blood vessels and excretion of sodium by the kidneys, two fundamental mechanisms of hypertension treatment. Animal studies have suggested a role for this pathway in blood pressure control, and the current findings strongly support its relevance in human patients.

"We have previously shown that variants in natriuretic peptide genes, part of the cGMP system, influence blood pressure. We were therefore pleased but not surprised to see other genes that influence the cGMP system in this recent crop of discoveries," said Newton-Cheh, an assistant professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. "The greatest attention in blood pressure research has been focused on another pathway called the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), which is targeted by several hypertension therapies. But only one common gene variant has been associated with genes in the RAAS pathway.

"Finding several independent associations that converge on cGMP points to its central importance in blood pressure control," he adds. "In fact, there are several drugs that target these systems in development to treat pulmonary hypertension and heart failure, but our findings suggest that they could have a much larger role in hypertension treatment in general. The next phase of our research will focus on finding additional genes and variants that influence blood pressure and on establishing how some of the cGMP-involved genes affect blood pressure in humans and respond to existing drugs and to those in development."
