Lane-swapping helps autonomous vehicles avoid collisions

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Autonomous, driverless vehicles look set to hit the streets in the near future and become increasingly common, so UK researchers have investigated algorithms that could help developers include escape manoeuvres to allow such vehicles to quickly and safely switch lanes to avoid collisions with other road users.

Writing in the aptly named International Journal of Vehicle Autonomous Systems, Matthew Best of the Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering at Loughborough University, in Leicestershire, discusses the optimisation of a vehicle's standard brake, acceleration and steering control inputs in the context of avoiding collisions. He has devised a computer simulation that allows all those parameters to be optimised concurrently during a safety manoeuvre and to show how speed reduction and swapping lanes might be carried out by an autonomous vehicle.

The optimal rapid lane-change would inevitably be an aggressive, high "g" manoeuvre that would destabilise the vehicle, and additional computing power would be needed to act quickly to correct under steer and other issues that arise during and after such a vehicle movement. The high-speed lane switch would likely be rarely used in a real-world autonomous drive, but could, in exceptional circumstances, allow driverless or robot vehicles to be safer on roads that which they share with other such vehicles and vehicles with human drivers.

Best points out that simulations at 70 mph (the UK national speed limit on motorways) reveal that braking alone would not lead to a safe outcome in many situations, so a lane swap would almost certainly be needed, assuming there were an empty lane for a vehicle to move into. A lane-change would in the best circumstances move the vehicle to safety in half the distance as braking at that speed.

The researchers concede that at present the limitations of on-board computing power in autonomous vehicles and the need for high-speed data streams measuring real tyre friction coefficients and more means that his algorithm is limited to the simulation at present. However, it paves the way for developing more powerful, safety aware driving systems for such vehicles.

Artiphon's 'Instrument 1' is an iPhone powered multi-instrument, we go hands-on

Artiphon's Instrument One is an iPhone powered multi-instrument, we get hands-on

Music, MIDI and mobile? Seen that before, right? Well, yeah, but sometimes something comes along that surprises everyone. Artiphon's Instrument 1 is one such thing. And after all, there's more than one way to crack a nut. Artiphon's method involves creating a high-quality muli-instrument device that uses an iPhone or iPod touch as its brain. So, this is no plastic (bear with us) "appcessory." The Instrument 1 is made out of special quality African hardwood, and centers around an intentionally ambiguous design. There is a pair of high-quality custom speakers that give impressive 30W onboard sound. There is, of course, a line out and MIDI in / out too. The prototype we saw today doesn't have a built-in battery, but final production models will, making this a truly portable, complete solution. Dr Mike Butera, the firm's founder, was keen to explain to us that this is intended not to replicate one specific device (though it does a great job of guitar, violin, banjo and more), but rather to enable musicians to be able to work in a way they want to. The Instrument 1 works with any core MIDI enabled app, but there are plans to release a companion app for more detailed / custom mappings in the future. We got a private tour of the device, to tip-toe past the break for more.

The first thing we noticed was how authentic it felt. Authentic what? Well, ok, that's a little harder to explain. It definitely felt more like holding an instrument, than a MIDI device or an accessory component though. The oiled wood finish, metal speaker grilles and overall quality of the device make it feel like something you'd wield with care. The iPhone section is also pleasantly discreet. Sure, it takes somewhat center place, but at the same time keeps it out of the way when you're playing. Under the neck you'll also find some additional controls that steer the Instrument 1 in more dedicated instrument directions (bass mode for fret tapping, banjo mode with arpeggios etc). The small black box below the iPhone housing serves as a strum-surface (or when in violin mode, the area you "bow"), and the neck section is largely akin to a guitar neck, but when approached creatively, can be used in all manner of ways, such as drum-pads when resting on your lap. For those that want to know, it's currently sporting a 30-pin connector, but has room enough so that you can also use it with a lightning adaptor. There's also a physical volume control and a USB port.

As for the MIDI options... there are plenty. Polyphonic aftertouch, vibrato, versatile modulation and mapping, to name a few. There is an octave switch on the neck, also, so that you can get a wide range of musical notes with ease. Mike showed us that as there are two sensors on each neck-note, you can effectively cram two octaves into the same space too, should this better suit your needs. As mentioned above, currently this is the third prototype, but full production is expected soon. How much, then, does Artiphon want for the Instrument 1? That'll be $800 when it eventually rolls out towards the end of this year. A tall price for a MIDI controller perhaps, but you'll be replacing your entire band at the same time. Just don't tell them yet. Go south for the demo video.

Waldo Fire Victims Feel Bullied By Insurance Companies

Homeowners affected by the Waldo Canyon Fire feel like they are in a tug-of-war battle with their insurance companies.

Over 100 residents filled the room at a heated and emotional call-to-action meeting Saturday with representatives from the Colorado Division of Insurance. (DORA).

Dozens stood up for their families and spoke their minds about mistreatment of their fire insurance settlement claims.

The fire victims say they feel abused, neglected and bullied by their insurance companies.

"I've been intimidated, I've been harassed, I?ve been ignored and in the meantime I just want my home back to the pre-loss condition that my policy states I should have,? said Mountain Shadows homeowner Judy Brinkman. ?I?m not asking for anything, I don?t want any money from the insurance companies that I am not owed.?

The meeting addressed damage settlements, repairs, property replacement and customer service issues.

Families and homeowners were very emotional as they talked about health issues, improper damage evaluations, and unresponsive adjusters. Many said they are not being properly paid for their losses.

?Everyday you wipe off the dust, you wipe off the suit and ashes. And it got so hot inside the house, that our windows are separated from the house itself? said Peregrine homeowner Julie Pruitt.

?They've like we don't have to cover that, or the other comment is 'always prove that is from the fire.' We're just in circular arguments, frustration, anger, resentment; there's just nowhere to go. You just feel like such a victim,? said Brinkman.

The main issues brought up were: suit, ash and smoke damage, exterior house damage, insurance companies' failure to investigate properly, non-responsive insurance adjusters, no time extensions, family health issues caused by the fire, damage not evaluated properly, under insured, suffering from additional costs, not being paid for their losses. Many asked for DORA to investigate their insurance companies and how they are handling their claims.

?I?m a Vietnam veteran, I went over to Vietnam to protect the people of the United States, and I did my duty. That?s why DORA has to do their duty, and state representatives have to do their duty,? said Mountain Shadows homeowner Ron Haberkorn.

Families who just want to move on after the Waldo Canyon Fire say the insurance woes are taking a huge emotional toll.

"People just need to be made whole and let people move on, but it's hard to move on when you don't have closure on getting things fixed, and having to struggle through that every day,? said Pruitt.

The newly formed Catastrophic Insurance Complaints in Colorado (CICIC) Association held the meeting at the Colorado Springs Together Facility.

Residents had the chance to offer their issues in order to form some solutions in front of DORA, as well as local and state leaders and legislators.

If you need help with your Waldo insurance issues, contact CICIC at 719-660-8158.

Barge with 80,000 gallons oil hits bridge, leaks

VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) ? The Coast Guard says a barge that hit a railroad bridge in Vicksburg, Miss., was carrying 80,000 gallons of light crude oil, but officials don't know how much has spilled into the Mississippi River.

Lt. Ryan Gomez says an oily sheen was reported three miles downriver of the accident, which happened early Sunday. Gomez says booms were set out to absorb and contain the oil. The river has been closed for eight miles in each direction, halting at least five northbound and two southbound vessels.

Gomez says he doesn't know how much oil has leaked. He says two barges were damaged, but it's possible only one actually hit the bridge.

Petty Officer Carlos Vega says the bridge has been found safe for trains.

China urges Japan to co-operate in resolving islands dispute

BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese Communist Party Chief Xi Jinping said on Friday that China's position on a series of islands disputed with Japan is clear and consistent and urged Japan to co-operate in resolving the issue.

Japan should respect the feelings of the Chinese people and "correctly handle" historical problems, Xi told Natsuo Yamaguchi, a visiting lawmaker and head of the junior partner in Japan's ruling coalition.

"The Japanese side ought to face up to history and facts, take practical step and work hard with China to find an effective way to appropriately resolve and manage the issue via dialogue and consultations," Xi said, according to a statement on the Foreign Ministry's website.

The islands are called the Diaoyu in Chinese and the Senkaku by Japan. Relations between the countries are at a low after the Japanese government bought three of the islands last year, sparking widespread, violent anti-Japan protests across China.

'Hansel

'Hansel' has had a troubled production history and is an admittedly out-there twist on an old fairy tale. How are critics liking the film?

By Molly Driscoll,?Staff Writer / January 25, 2013

'Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters' stars Jeremy Renner (r.) and Gemma Arterton (l.) as the titular siblings.

Fairy tales are still hot commodities in Hollywood, which is undoubtedly one of the reasons behind a new film starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters." In the new spin on the story, Hansel and Gretel are all grown up and harboring a grudge against witches like the one who took them captive and was planning to eat them (seriously, fairy tales are way more grim than you remember).

The two siblings are protected from witches' curses, making them uniquely qualified to take on those who are causing problems. They work as bounty hunters who take care of witchy problems, and in this particular story, Hansel and Gretel take on a group of them led by lead witch Muriel (Famke Janssen).

"Hansel" has experienced a somewhat troubled production history, with its release date originally scheduled for March of last year. It was then moved up to earlier this month, Jan. 11, and then switched again to Jan. 25. A statement from the movie?s studio, Paramount, suggested that the second change took place to enable the movie to be released in IMAX.

?The Imax experience continues to be the most immersive and entertaining way to see films and we are thrilled to be releasing Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 3D now in late January so moviegoers have an opportunity to see the film in this way,? Paramount president of domestic marketing and distribution Megan Colligan told the Hollywood Reporter.

The movie was not screened for critics before its official release, and so far, the reviews that have been posted have been lukewarm.

David Voigt of Examiner.com said the movie has its entertaining moments but falls flat at other times.

"Hardly a movie that will ever run the risk of being taken with a completely straight face, this... is a film that has some fun gonzo moments appropriate with the genre, but ones that are also fairly restrained and doesn't do nearly far enough," Voigt wrote. "Heavy on the effects and the set pieces, it moves along at a fair enough pace but there are longs stretches where the film feels re-written and often drab."

Amazon Cloud Drive Photos update brings automatic upload and in-app camera access

Android Central

An update to the Dropbox for Android application almost a year ago brought with it an extremely useful feature for the snap happy photographers among us -- auto upload of every photograph taken with the camera to your Dropbox account. Now, if Amazon's Cloud Drive is more your thing, you too can experience the same kind of auto uploading goodness with the latest update to the Cloud Drive Photos app.

Another cool new feature for Android 4.x users is the ability to take photos using the camera from within the app. A great little time saver if you're snapping away and trying to organise at the same time. The rest of the changelog isn't quite as exciting, but still pretty useful nonetheless. We now get the ability to select multiple photos to action on, view the upload and download status, along with being able to pause, stop and resume them too. If you're an Amazon Cloud Drive user, grab yourselves a copy from the Google Play Store link above. Equally, if you're yet to try it out, Amazon will give new accounts 5GB of free storage right out of the box.

Apple drops supplier over underage labor violations, hails 'high compliance' with reducing excessive work hours

Apple severs relationship with supplier over underage labor violations

Apple's latest Supplier Responsibility Report has just been published, detailing 393 audits focused on the plants and suppliers that help make all that hardware. The audit number is a 72 percent increase in what it covered in its last annual report, while Apple was also quick to highlight its contracting companies' high compliance (92 percent) with a maximum 60-hour work week. Senior vice president of operations Jeff Williams told Reuters that underage workers and limiting working hours were two of the most challenging issues it faced in its supplier audits. Apple decided to end business relations with component maker Guangdong Real Faith Pingzhou Electronics over underage labour issues. "We go deep in the supply chain to find it," said Williams. "And when we do find it, we ensure that the underage workers are taken care of, the suppliers are dealt with."

Dung beetles use the Milky Way as compass

Dacke et al. / Current Biology

You might expect dung beetles to keep their "noses to the ground," but they are actually incredibly attuned to the sky. A report published in Current Biology shows that even on the darkest of nights, African ball-rolling insects are guided by the soft glow of the Milky Way.

By Alan Boyle, Science Editor, NBC News

When dung beetles roll their tiny balls of poop across the sands of South Africa on a moonless night, they look to the glow of our Milky Way galaxy as a navigational aid, researchers report.

"Even on clear, moonless nights, many dung beetles still manage to orientate along straight paths," Marie Dacke, a biologist at Sweden's Lund University, said in a news release. "This led us to suspect that the beetles exploit the starry sky for orientation ? a feat that had, to our knowledge, never before been demonstrated in an insect."

That's an amazing claim. But what's just as amazing are the lengths to which the researchers went to make their case.

First, they built a 10-foot-wide (3-meter-wide) circular arena in a South African game reserve and watched what troops of nocturnal dung beetles did on moonlit nights, moonless nights and cloudy nights. They fitted the bugs with little cardboard caps to block their view of the sky. They even fitted some of the bugs with transparent plastic caps, just to make sure that any differences they saw were due to the sky blockage rather than the presence of the caps.

Then the scientists took their dung-beetle arena into the Johannesburg Planetarium and ran the same experiment, to eliminate the possibility that the beetles were using terrestrial landmarks to plot their course in the dark. The planetarium was programmed to show the night sky with the Milky Way, or the Milky Way without the brightest stars in the sky, or the brightest stars without the Milky Way, or just the diffuse glow of the Milky Way with no stars at all.

The bottom line was clear: Those bugs could keep track of how the fuzzy streak of the Milky Way was oriented in the sky, to make sure they rolled their balls of dung in a suitably straight line.

Why is that so important? Without the proper orientation, the beetles might circle back to the dung pile, where they'd have to face all the other beetles trying to steal away their tiny balls of poop. That would put the bugs' intended meal at risk. "The dung beetles don't care which direction they're going in; they just need to get away from the bun fight at the poo pile," Marcus Byrne of South Africa's University of the Witwatersrand explained in a news release.

    Marcus Byrne

Dung beetles were fitted with tiny cardboard caps to see how well they could navigate when the night sky was blocked out. When they were wearing the caps, the bugs were more prone to go around in circles.

The University of the Witwatersrand's Marcus Byrne discusses dung beetles in a TED talk.

Dacke, Byrne and their colleagues describe their latest dung-beetle adventure in this week's issue of Current Biology. Researchers have previously chronicled the bugs' other peculiarities: how the insects do a "dance" on top of their dung balls to get themselves oriented (and keep cool as well) ... how they monitor the sun and the moon for poop-ball navigation ... and how they discriminate between different flavors of dung (the smellier, the better).

Byrne said the idea of checking the bugs' celestial compass came up during an earlier series of South African experiments with the bugs. "We were sitting out in Vryburg, and the Milky Way was this massive light source," he recalled. "We thought, they have to be able to use this?? they just have to!"

The latest experiments show that for the nocturnal beetles (Scarabaeus satyrus), the moon is the most reliable guide. It took about 20 seconds, on average, for the bugs to make their way out of the arena under moonlit conditions. On a moonless, starry night, it took about 40 seconds. But it took three times as long on a cloudy night, or when the bugs were wearing those cardboard caps. The planetarium tests came up with similar results: The bugs were quickest when they could look up at the dome and see the full, starry sky (43 seconds), or even the Milky Way's bright, diffuse band without the stars (53 seconds). When the planetarium dome was totally dark, the average time rose to 120 seconds.

Before this study, only birds, humans and seals were known to use the stars for orientation. The compound eyes of a dung beetle may not be all that great?? but they're good enough to make out the Milky Way's glowing band in a dark sky.

"This study shows that some insects can use the starry sky for orientation, even though they might not necessarily be able to discriminate the individual stars," the researchers wrote. "In theory, insects could use any large and dense group of bright stars for orientation or nocturnal migration."

Scientists have long suspected that celestial orientation is used by still more species, ranging from moths and spiders to newts and frogs. This latest batch of meticulous experiments with poop-rolling beetles may well point the way to confirming those suspicions.

    More beetle mania:

In addition to Dacke and Byrne, the authors of "Dung Beetles Use the Milky Way for Orientation" include Emily Baird, Clarke H. Scholtz and Eric J. Warrant.

Vitor Belfort?s war of words with Chael Sonnen shows he is crazy like a fox

After beating Michael Bisping in a middleweight bout at UFC on FX 7, Vitor Belfort said he wanted a shot at the UFC light heavyweight belt. He called Chael Sonnen a clown, and asked for a "champion vs. champion" shot at Jon Jones.

He continued during the UFC postfight show on Fuel.

?[Sonnen] is a clown. Get out. Get out of the way. He just got knocked out pretty bad by Anderson Silva then he fights Jon Jones. He doesn?t deserve the reality show. Let me fight - real champion versus real champion. I know he?s a good athlete, but he needs to go to the back of the line. Let me fight the rematch.?

Belfort fought Jones in September and lost by submission. Sonnen will fight Jones in April after the conclusion of "The Ultimate Fighter." They will coach against each other on the show. Sonnen, a commentator on the postfight show, immediately responded.

?Let me be really clear and speak directly to you Vitor. You have been telling the world that you want to meet Jesus and I will gladly arrange that travel, but first I am going to get rid of Jon Jones, then you are next. Vitor, I accept. Don?t make any mistake about that. You have called me out twice now,? Sonnen said.

Their war of words continued on Twitter.

Belfort's vitriol at Sonnen seemed so out of place. Belfort is a middleweight, and if he's looking for another shot at the light heavyweight title, perhaps he should look for a middleweight fight first?

But what Belfort did do was set himself up perfectly for an injury replacement if Sonnen or Jones were to suffer one. This has happened in three of the last four seasons of TUF, so it's not a bad idea on Belfort's part. Considering Sonnen got their light heavyweight title shot after fighting at middleweight for years, and Nick Diaz got one after a suspension and a loss, there's not much rhyme or reason to the UFC's title match making these days. Belfort is making a smart play based on recent history.

Cleaning jobs linked to asthma risk

Jan. 21, 2013 ? A new study has found strong evidence for a link between cleaning jobs and risk of developing asthma.

Researchers at Imperial College London tracked the occurrence of asthma in a group of 9,488 people born in Britain in 1958. Not including those who had asthma as children, nine per cent developed asthma by age 42. Risks in the workplace were responsible for one in six cases of adult onset asthma ? even more than the one in nine cases attributed to smoking, according to the analysis.

There are many occupations that are thought to cause asthma. In this study, 18 occupations were clearly linked with asthma risk, four of which were cleaning jobs and a further three of which were likely to involve exposure to cleaning products.

Farmers, hairdressers, and printing workers were also found to have increased risk, as previous studies have reported. Farmers were approximately four times more likely to develop asthma as an adult than office workers.

Besides cleaning products, flour, enzymes, metals, and textiles were among materials in the workplace identified in the study as being linked to asthma risk.

The study?s lead author, Dr Rebecca Ghosh of the MRC-HPA Centre for Environment and Health at Imperial College London, said: ?This study identified 18 occupations that are clearly linked with asthma risk, but there are others that did not show up in our analysis, mainly because they are relatively uncommon. Occupational asthma is widely under-recognised by employers, employees and healthcare professionals. Raising awareness that this is an almost entirely preventable disease would be a major step in reducing its incidence.?

The study, published in the journal Thorax, was funded by Asthma UK and the Colt Foundation.

Malayka Rahman, Research Analysis and Communications Officer at Asthma UK, said: "This research has highlighted a new group of people, specifically those working in occupations related to cleaning, such as cleaners or home-based personal care workers, who may have developed adult onset asthma due to exposure to chemicals they work with on a daily basis. We advise anyone who works in the industries highlighted in this study and who have experienced breathing problems to discuss this with their GP, and we urge healthcare professionals to make sure they consider possible occupational causes in adult onset asthma and tailor their advice to people with asthma accordingly."

Around 5.4 million people in the UK have asthma, some of whom suffer as children and some of whom develop the disease in later life.

    O, CANADA!

These folks know how to keep warm.

At the Canadian Embassy, a couple hundred guests lined up on the chilly open promenade of the embassy for that country's native treats: a fried dough delicacy of Beavertails, beer and hot cider.

"We love Obama!" said Pam Hooker, co-owner of Ottawa-based BeaverTails Canada Inc., as she handed out the fried dough to the embassy crowd from a bright red food truck parked on the embassy grounds. Her husband Grant Hooker says they created the "ObamaTail" version of the flat, oval-shaped fried dough, topped cinnamon sugar, whipped cream and chocolate and maple topping. "President Obama insisted on having one" when he visited Ottawa in 2009, Grant says, but "security whisked him away after we handed him one, and we never got to hear back on what he thought of it."

The Canadian embassy had an ideal vantage point overlooking the parade route on Pennsylvania Avenue. It also offered stunning views of the Capitol and National Mall.

Talk among the diplomats and military officers, in a mix of English and French, veered from talk of how Canadian troops would be out of Afghanistan by 2014, to hopes that the US Congress and the White House would see eye to eye and avert another fiscal cliff drama.

"We think of ourselves as being at 'center ice' here on Pennsylvania Avenue halfway between the Hill and the White House," says Canadian Ambassador Gary Doer. Center ice is an ice hockey term, for the center of the rink between the two goals. "We are hoping for similar balance between the two in 2013," he said with a smile.

'Girl Rising' spotlights need for girls' education

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) ? Just because a film isn't finished doesn't mean it can't get buzz at Sundance.

Director Richard Robbins showed about 10 minutes of his new movie, "Girl Rising," at the independent-film festival Monday, even though he still has a few weeks of post-production work to do on the project.

The film tells the stories of nine girls from different developing countries and shows how access to education would change their lives.

Robbins, who works as a writer for TV's "Scandal," said he had hoped to finish the film in time to compete or premiere at Sundance, but after visiting 10 countries in 12 months gathering footage, he just couldn't make it in time. Still, he wanted to generate interest in the film, which is set for release in March.

It is being distributed by CNN Films and Gather, an on-demand distribution platform that allows those interested in the film to request a theatrical showing in their neighborhood.

Actress Freida Pinto introduced "Girl Rising" Monday at Sundance by sharing some powerful statistics: There are 66 million girls who are not in school; 14 million girls under 18 who will be married this year; and 150 million girls are victims of sexual violence each year.

"No one is more vulnerable than an uneducated girl," she said. "Making a girl aware of her fundamental human rights through education can change all that."

Girls who are educated marry later, have fewer and healthier children, achieve self-sufficiency and continue the cycle of education with their own children, Pinto said.

"If you educate girls, you will change the world," she said.

The film features the voices of Meryl Streep, Salma Hayek, Kerry Washington, Alicia Keys, Cate Blanchett and Selena Gomez, among others.

Bow Tie Pasta Primavera. Avocado-Pesto on Top.

Tonight's dinner: Bow Tie Pasta Primavera. Avocado-Pesto on Top. So excited about this colorful, inviting bowl. This recipe gave me a taste of spring or sunny summer in a the middle of winter. (Although, I do have to admit that LA has a bright blue sky today...) Lunch or dinner approved.

The Dish. Tender veggie-colored bow tie pasta is tossed with an array of colorful veggies: red bell pepper, bright green broccoli, zesty red onion, lively black olives, sweet crunchy carrots and optional capers too. This creamy melange of pasta and veggies includes a lemon-tahini-pepper dressing to start, then another rich pesto sauce on top, the side or folded in to create ultra-creamy pasta bliss. Serve this dish warm or chilled. Healthy veggies, comfort food pasta and rich delicious pesto all in one very cheerful bowl. Leftovers are amazing too! Get my recipe..

Pasta + Veggies + Sunny Accents & Flavors. I pulled some bow tie pasta from the pantry and instead of slathering those tender, pointy ties in red marinara sauce I decided to go with rainbow-colored dish. Pasta Primavera. This lively blend of veggies includes a lemon-tahini-pepper sauce for the pasta and veggies. Then over top I dollop on some rich avocado walnut pesto made using spinach and walnuts, garlic and avocado, a splash of EVOO and plenty of lemon too.

Dive into this colorful bowl and brighten up any winter day.

This dish is delish served warm or chilled!

Add the creamy pesto over top of old in to serve..

    Oil Options!
This is a fun recipe to use creative oils in. I recently received an email from a reader asking how in the world one uses healthy hemp oil. Well this pasta is great! Sub a few Tbsp of the hemp oil in place of the olive oil. You could also try pumpkin seed, walnut or grape seed oils. I don't always go overboard on adding oils to my food, but for pasta I really enjoy a nice drizzle in my pasta and veggies. It really gives everything a nice richness and the oil adds fat which adds to the satiety level of my food which helps you feel satisfied without over-loading your plate with pasta. I find that when my pasta contains oil I eat much less of it than when it is more low-fat or oil free.

Kathy's Pasta Primavera with lemon, pepper, tahini and pesto
    vegan, makes 8 cups

    Pasta + Veggies:
2 cups dry bow tie pasta (vegan)
    1 bell pepper, chopped
    1 red onion, chopped
2 medium carrots, sliced or diced
2 ounces black olives, sliced (or kalamata olives)
    2 Tbsp capers (optional)
    1/4 cup nutritional yeast (optional)

    Lemon Pepper Tahini Dressing:
3 lemons, juices + 1/2 tsp lemon zest (organic)
2 tsp maple or agave syrup (optional, adds hint of sweetness)
    2-3 Tbsp tahini
3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil (use more or less according to tastes for richness)
    1/4 tsp dried bell pepper
1/4 tsp dried onion or garlic
    1/2 tsp fine black pepper
    1/2 tsp chili pepper
    1/2 tsp salt (to taste)
*all the spices in this dressing are adjustable to taste as well

    Avo-Spinach Walnut Pesto:
    1/2 cup raw walnuts
    1 small avocado
1/3 - 1/2 cup pasta water (or warm water)
1/2 tsp chopped garlic or roasted garlic
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 cup baby spinach (1 large handful)
    1-2 Tbsp nutritional yeast (optional)
salt to taste OR add 2 tsp white miso paste which is naturally salty

    Directions:

    1. Start out by boiling some salted water on your stove and dropping your bow tie pasta.

    2. While your pasta cooks, you can prep all your veggies and mix up your dressing in a side bowl.

    3. About 2 minutes before your pasta is tender, drop the broccoli into the boiling water. This will blanch the broccoli to a tender state, but not overcook it. This is also easy because you do not have to cook it separately.

    4. Drain your pasta and broccoli and transfer to a large mixing bowl. I like to now add in my nutritional yeast and toss a bit. Also add in your fresh veggies: peppers, onion, carrots. Also fold in the olives and optional capers.

    5. Next you want to gently fold in the tahini dressing. Be careful to toss gently so you do not break apart all the bow-ties. After you have tossed the pasta and veggies and dressing do a taste test and salt to taste. You can also add more seasonings and nutritional yeast if you'd like. Cover bowl and allow the flavors to settle and marinate while you prep the pesto.

    6. Pesto: Add all the ingredients to a high-speed blender or food processor. Blend until smooth. Taste test and salt to taste. (I love using white miso paste to salt my pesto! Basic salt works too.) As you blend - add more or less water to thin out the blend.

    7. You have two options, serve the pasta now slightly warm with the warm pesto OR chill everything. Then you can serve both chilled or serve re-heated pasta with chilled pesto or re-heat both. Both the pasta and pesto taste yummy warm and cold - so you cannot really go wrong here.

    Enjoy!

Pair with white wine and some crusty bread on the side.

Florida Estate Planning: Protecting Your Assets | Siben & Siben ...

In Florida, as in elsewhere, when planning your estate and protecting your assets, decisions should be made with the advice and under the guidance of an attorney. However, for whatever reason, many people fail to take adequate measures to protect their assets. If you plan to go it alone make certain that your family will not be left with only a large burden of debt by at least taking the following actions.

One: Create and sign a financial power of attorney, which will designate an agent of your choosing who would be responsible for handling your financial affairs should you become in any way incapacitated. This designated agent, whether a professional, a friend or family member will be able to pay your bills manage your investments, your insurance and your taxes should you be unable to do so. Failing to do so would necessitate your family to getting court permission to handle these basic tasks-an unnecessary expense.

2)Designate a health-care surrogate, who will assist in make decisions about your health care when you cannot. This person will be responsible for making certain that your living will is executed properly and that your end-of-life instructions are fulfilled as ordered. It would also be prudent to create a living will.

3)Review your designated beneficiaries annually. Check on all forms on file with your bank, in your retirement accounts and your life insurance policies.

Make certain that, if you?ve listed your wife is listed as your beneficiary, you?ve also list your children as contingent beneficiaries, in the event that something should happen to your spouse. This could save your children thousands of dollars in tax liability.

Next, assess your net worth. List all of your assets including your home, vehicles, bank accounts, investments, CDs, cash on hand and all items valued in excess of five hundred dollars.

Then make a separate listing of all of your liabilities including any debts, outstanding loans and your mortgage. Tally your assets and debts and keep these figures on hand when speaking with an accountant, a financial advisor or an estate planning attorney.

Create a will, or if you already have one, make certain it is up to date, to ensure that your assets will be distributed according to your wishes. Take into account any new family members, deaths, births, marriages and divorces.

Seven: Title your assets properly. Failing to title your assets properly can undo your asset protection plan. In the case of a married couple who have created wills, or a credit shelter trust, in order to preserve the estate tax exemption, and protect the surviving spouse from bankruptcy, you must keep all assets titled separately, or no longer qualify for the benefit . if however you choose to have your estates distributed through living trusts, make certain that the assets are retitled in the name of that trust. Yes this is complicated and it would behoove you to contact an estate planning attorney to ensure you have titled your assets properly.

Eight: Distribute as much of your wealth as you can while you?re alive. You are entitled to gift up to $13,000 each year in cash stock or other property to anyone, estate tax free. You may also pay for any person?s college or private school tuition (as long as the check is sent directly to the school) in addition to that $13,000 a year gift allowance. Likewise you may pay for any other person?s medical expenses, as long as the check is sent directly to the healthcare provider. You may also give up to $1 million to anyone and receive a single lifetime gift tax extension.

An estate planning attorney can advise you regarding the creation of various trusts and tax shelters, which can save your family a great deal of money. It would be wise to set an appointment with a professional.

While taking these steps alone can save your family a great deal of grief and money, to make certain that your hard-earned assets are protected from all who would prey upon them, it would be wise to consult a professional, to establish a relationship with a Florida estate planning attorney.

Another reason for consulting an attorney is to discuss methods of dealing with estate taxes. Although Florida does not, at this time, collect estate tax, in these uncertain financial times, there no telling what changes are in store from Florida and the Federal government. With this in mind, it?d be wise to work with an estate planning attorney to consider drafting a combination of will and trusts as soon as possible.
