The Paleo Diet is based basically on how our ancestors ate about 500 generations ago before the modern agricultural revolution. These foods, based on 229 of the previous hunter gatherer societies, which generally consist of lean meats, seafood, fresh fruit and vegetables, are high in the fundamental nutriments such as minerals , vitamins, photochemicals, fiber, omega 3, anti-oxidating compounds, paleo diet fat sources and more. These foods are also low in the glycemic index, which describes the effects on blood glucose sugar levels, which is a large indicator of weight loss & weight gain. These paleo foods are also low in trans fat, processed sugars, salt, and high glycemic carbohydrates. The diet is designed to eliminate the bad and increase the good in foods that are available to us to plug overall fitness (limit sicknesses).

According to Dr. Loren Cordain (Father of Paleo Nourishment), The Paleo Diet inspires dieters to replace dairy and grain products with fresh vegetables and fruit. Foods that are far more nutritious than whole grains or dairy goods. A study done at the Office of Health and Exercise Science, Colorado State School, has found that Paleolithic nourishment provides all the vitamins and minerals we need, excepting Vitamin D (which we generally get through exposure to sun), even with getting rid of two major food groups.

Essentially, the paleo diet is reliant on how we ate before our present diets of packaged foods, high fructose corn syrups, hormone prompted huge growth in plants and animals, and other genetically enhanced food behaviours. It is going back to the source that Mother Nature has reserved for humans to consume so as to live. Paleo is about going back to the environment where illness was less and obesity was not a factor.

The Paleo Diet is going back about 10,000 years back! Our ancestors before the agricultural revolution and animal husbandry lived essentially an approach to life of hunting and gathering. Their primary goal on a day to day basis was to hunt and gather. This led on to large periods between meals where they might fast because they didn't have a readily available food source. Yes, they did have a short lifespan, though it was essentially due to stress and not due to protracted diseases such as coronary disease, obesity , cancer, for example.

If you take a look at still existent hunter-gatherer societies in the modern world, about 20% of them are past the age of 60 with approximately each one of them showing no indications of illnesses that result from a transformed food industry. Once these hunter-gatherer societies start adopting a Western diet, diseases start showing up more.

Jerry Sax writes for paleo diet food list web site and he is gathering recipes for his first paleo cookbook.
