Music Notes ? November 2012 | WeJoySing

Being a Mom these days is more demanding than ever: From balancing family with a career, to organizing your time to meet other?s expectations, to maintaining a healthy life style, to providing the best parenting for our children. It can be exhausting just thinking about it.

WJSWhat?s Important in a Mom?s Life?
?Time, time, time!! With two kids under the age of 3 and both parents working full-time, some things have to give. My house doesn?t always look spotless, and we often go to sleep with trucks and rattles on the floor and not in their respective baskets, but I would much rather have special moments with my children than toys in their baskets every night,? states Karla Warren: Wife, Mom, Homemaker, Professional, and WeJoySing Champion.

Karla and her husband, Trevor, have worked outside the home since before their children, Quinn and Harper, were born. As their family grew, they took a serious look at their choices. ?We discussed many various factors each time we expanded our family, and we reached the conclusion each time that both of us working outside the home is what is best for our family.?

Different Faces of ?Motherhood?
?I often say that it would be very boring if we all picked the same route in life! If everyone married at 25, had a child at 27, didn?t work, or everyone worked. Some of us work full time, some part time, some go to school, some stay home, but what connects us all is the love we have for our children!? Karla feels a common bond with other WeJoySing parents, regardless of whether they spend their day hours ?at work? in their career or ?at-home.?

When asked if she feels that her time with her child is more ?at a premium? than that of stay-at-home moms, her response was: ?Oh gosh, no. I would never say that my time is more ?at a premium? than any other mom. Every mom would like more time to be with their children and get things done around the home.?

Karla doesn?t envy any other situation. She is content with her situation and knows that it is the best choice for her family. She acknowledges that every situation is different and ?uniqueness of situations? is part of what makes the world a good place.

WJSMusic Makes the
?Family-Go-Round?

Like most WeJoySing parents, Karla makes singing and music an integral part of her time with her children. ?Now that Quinn is becoming of preschool age, we are also using songs to introduce counting. I often start singing a song and then stop a few words into it to allow Quinn to ?pick it up? and start singing. This fosters his creativity AND his confidence. He gets a very big smile on his face when he takes over the song. He?s so proud to show he knows the words.?

Karla has also found that WeJoySing songs are great before story time and at bedtime. ?It is wonderful to unwind and connect after a busy day and evening. It is nice to spend that time cuddling and focusing on my children without any distractions such as television or ringing cell phones.?

WJSWhat Makes It All Work?
Feeling ?very lucky? to work for an employer that encourages a ?work/family life balance,? Karla says her superiors understand that children often get sick and have doctor appointments. They know it is important for her to be with her little ones at those times and that work commitments, at times, must come second. With generous flex-time and time off, Karla has the ?luxury? to care for her children in ways that she acknowledges other working parents may not have. ?I am very thankful,? Karla said. ?I love my job.?

Karla also feels ?very blessed? to have a ?wonderful partner? in Trevor. ?He?s a very ?hands- on? dad. I wouldn?t be able to work if it wasn?t for the support of him at home and with the kids??

Karla leaves the house early in the morning before the kids are awake so that she can pick them up from daycare in the afternoon. Trevor wakes them and dresses them, packs their bags and drops them off?no small feat with children under the age of 3! ?It?s anything but easy for him!? Karla empathized.

Keys to a Successful ?2-Parents-Working? Family
Karla and Trevor have found?communication?and?organization?to be the keys to a successful two-parents-working family. ?About once a month we sit down with the calendar and review any dates that the other one has that might impact our normal routine. For instance, if he has an early morning breakfast meeting, I need to have this date on my calendar so that I can make plans to do daycare drop-off,? Karla said.

WJSA Note from Mrs. Jo
Many thanks to Karla for sharing with us a window into her world. Through that window, I think I see her snuggled up with Quinn and Harper, reading together? The Wide Mouth Frog?and singing:??There was a frog lived in the spring. Sing song kitty-catchy-kie-me-o!??WeJoySing is surrounded by fantastic parents like Karla and Trevor. We are overjoyed that you have invited WeJoySing to be a part of your family?s life and development!
