On July 24 the U.S Department of the Interior and Department of Energy published the Final Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) for Solar Development in six southwestern states (Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah). The plan will guide development of large-scale solar energy projects on public lands throughout the region.

On January 27, TWS, along with several organizations making up the Sportsmen for Responsible Energy Development (SFRED), commented on the proposed Supplement to the Draft PEIS. The final PEIS integrated some of the coalition?s recommendations, including: addressing habitat fragmentation and connectivity issues, refining solar energy zones (SEZ) to include areas with the fewest resource conflicts, and establishing exclusion areas that protect sensitive fish and wildlife species and their habitat.

The coalition expressed support for the responsible development of solar energy on public lands as long as there is a continued search for additional funding for mitigation and compensation for impacts to fish, wildlife, access, and recreation.
