After accepting the award for best female video for "Born This Way," Calderone came into a backstage press room smoking a cigarette and drinking what looked like whiskey. She stamped the cigarette out on the carpet before posing for photos.

Asked what she can express as Calderone that she can't as Gaga, she replied, "I don't understand the question." She said Gaga asked Calderone to come in her stead, saying, "If you really love me, you'll go instead of me and you'll get in that spotlight."

"So I did," said Calderone, describing himself as a guy from New Jersey whose family hails from Palermo, Italy.

BRITNEY TRIBUTE: Britney Spears has made many memorable appearances at the Video Music Awards (that liplock with Madonna, dancing with a snake to "Slave 4 U"), and she was honored for them with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

Lady Gaga, dressed in drag as her male alter-ego, presented the moon man trophy to a smiling Spears.

"One of my biggest inspirations was Britney Spears," Gaga said. "Britney taught me how to be fearless. She taught us all how to be fearless. She's a pop-music legend and the industry would not be the same without her."

Gaga's male Jo Calderone character then lingered, apparently hoping for a kiss from Spears, but Spears demurred.

"I've done that already," she said.

Dancers performed a medley of Spears' most popular songs, iconic outfits and signature dance moves.

"This award means so much to me," she said. "Especially on the night before Michael Jackson's birthday. He had such a huge influence on me."

But other celebs at the Video Music Awards said Spears was their big influence, including teen superstars Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber.

"She's been a huge inspiration to me," Gomez said. "I just think that she doesn't really take no for an answer. A lot of people try to bring her down and maybe judge her too quickly, and she still makes a comeback and she's still hot."

Bieber called Spears "an icon," saying, "She opened the doors for young people to do what they love."

Question on Seat Belt ticket - Is It Legal To

1. I received a seat belt ticket in Orange County NY. I found as of 2010 its a 2 point offense. I called an Attorney who told me he Guarentees it will be dropped to traffic ticket if I hire his office for $495.00 If he doesnt win he forfeits his fee. Here is my question. A friend of mine was explaining to me that if you show up for the court date more then likely you will get it dropped to a parking offense by yourself as a plea deal. I know a few years ago I received a speeding ticket upstate NY and when I went to court the Prosecutor offered to make it an illegal parking ticket with a $150 fine. I of course jumped on this. Is there something special I need to know about the process. I really cant afford to pay a lawyer $495 plus the cost of whatever the ticket is.
   Any advice would be appreciated.

Instead, the Puerto Rican puncher went on to lose to Carlos Molina on the night the Clottey bout would?ve taken place. LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? King of Pop Michael Jackson is gone, but he is not forgotten -- not by MTV Video Music Award voters.

Two days before the widely-watched awards show, MTV on Friday released a poll of the top moments chosen by voters in the program's nearly three decades with Jackson singled out for most iconic and best pop performances for a medley of songs he sang in 1995.

Jackson singing and dancing to "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Scream," "Beat It" and "Smooth Criminal" picked up 57 percent of the vote for most iconic performance, beating the likes of Madonna with "Like a Virgin" in 1984 and Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi" from 2009.

The "Thriller" singer, who died in June 2009 from a drug overdose, also got the nod for best pop performance with the same medley, again topping artists including Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, TLC and his own sister, Janet Jackson, who performed a tribute to Michael the year he died.

MTV annually gives away awards for best videos in what has become one of its most-watched telecasts. Last year's VMAs were seen by 11.4 million viewers, its biggest audience since 2002.

Perhaps more important than awards and stars, the program is known for its sometimes impromptu, often planned, outrageous moments that grab headlines around the world.

Last year, Lady Gaga showed up in a dress made completely of raw meat. Two years ago, Kanye West jumped onstage and grabbed a microphone from a stunned Taylor Swift to tell audiences that Beyonce, not Swift, should have won one award.

But where outrageousness is concerned, nothing beats the kisses shared among Madonna, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the 2003 show. It was voted the most outrageous moment of the VMAs history with 53 percent of the votes from some 15 million total ballots cast online.

The infamous kiss, during a performance of "Like a Virgin" and "Hollywood," beat out the fight between Kid Rock and Tommy Lee in 2007, Howard Stern appearing as Fartman and Diana Ross jiggling Lil Kim's breast at the 1999 show.

In fact, the flashy purple pantsuit Lil Kim wore, which left one breast exposed except for a pasty over her nipple, was picked by 39 percent of voters as the wildest outfit ever worn to the show, beating Lady Gaga's meat dress and Britney Spear's black leather biker ensemble from 2002.

Tablet Shipments Pegged at 250 Million by 2017 (NewsFactor)

If you thought a lot of people were scooping up tablet computers now, the market will be through the roof in the next six years. That's the prediction of In-Stat, a Surrey, U.K.-based market research firm that specializes in mobile Internet and digital entertainment.

Quadruple the Market?

A report by that firm predicts 250 million tablets will be shipped by manufacturers in 2017 -- or more than four times the projection for 2011 announced this month by global investment bank UBS of more than 60 million tablets.

The UBS figure includes 37.9 million Apple iPads and 22.2 million tablets powered by Google's Android operating system, which are made by a range of manufacturers, including Motorola, Samsung and Toshiba.

Well into the second half of 2011, In-Stat sees more growth as prices drop and new manufacturers jump into the market.

"The tablet market and its associated ecosystem are still evolving," said Jim McGregor, In-Stat chief technology strategist, in the report. "Over the next few generations we will see more differentiation between devices that are targeting different market segments and usage models. In addition, competitive devices and service pricing will bring tablets into the mainstream consumer and enterprise markets."

McGregor said tablets are part of an increase in smart-connected devices in our daily lives.

"These new devices mark a significant change in the electronics industry, where the content and applications are now the key differentiators and innovation drivers," he said.

While Apple and, to a lesser extent, Android devices are taking off, not every manufacturer has been able to hit the mark with tablets.

Hewlett-Packard's webOS-based TouchPad may earn a place in history as one of the biggest technology-market failures, with the company discontinuing the product and dropping the minimum price from $499 to $99 last week after seven weeks of poor sales.

But as younger consumers gain buying power and the barrage of apps makes it possible to do just about anything with a tablet, the devices likely will represent more of a practical than a novelty or luxury purchase.

Remote Controls

Tablet developers "will continue to update and upgrade and make these things do more in our lives," said technology analyst Jeff Kagan. "They want these tablets to become the remote control for our lives. They are picking up steam. More people buy them every day."

But looking so far ahead, how can anyone be sure another form factor won't push back tablet growth?

"The projection must be based on current activity," Kagan said. "That is not really reliable long-term, since so much can change tomorrow. Look at RIM: Solid growth until the iPhone came out four years ago. Look at previous micro laptops a few years ago. They lasted only a few years till tablets appeared. The real question is will tablets still be on fire in a few years, and what comes next? No one knows what they will do next."

How a distant black hole devoured a star

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2011) ? Two studies appearing in the Aug. 25 issue of the journal Nature provide new insights into a cosmic accident that has been streaming X-rays toward Earth since late March. NASA's Swift satellite first alerted astronomers to intense and unusual high-energy flares from the new source in the constellation Draco.

"Incredibly, this source is still producing X-rays and may remain bright enough for Swift to observe into next year," said David Burrows, professor of astronomy at Penn State University and lead scientist for the mission's X-Ray Telescope instrument. "It behaves unlike anything we've seen before."

Astronomers soon realized the source, known as Swift J1644+57, was the result of a truly extraordinary event -- the awakening of a distant galaxy's dormant black hole as it shredded and consumed a star. The galaxy is so far away, it took the light from the event approximately 3.9 billion years to reach Earth.

Burrows' study included NASA scientists. It highlights the X- and gamma-ray observations from Swift and other detectors, including the Japan-led Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) instrument aboard the International Space Station.

The second study was led by Ashley Zauderer, a post-doctoral fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass. It examines the unprecedented outburst through observations from numerous ground-based radio observatories, including the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA) near Socorro, N.M.

Most galaxies, including our own, possess a central supersized black hole weighing millions of times the sun's mass. According to the new studies, the black hole in the galaxy hosting Swift J1644+57 may be twice the mass of the four-million-solar-mass black hole in the center of the Milky Way galaxy. As a star falls toward a black hole, it is ripped apart by intense tides. The gas is corralled into a disk that swirls around the black hole and becomes rapidly heated to temperatures of millions of degrees.

The innermost gas in the disk spirals toward the black hole, where rapid motion and magnetism create dual, oppositely directed "funnels" through which some particles may escape. Jets driving matter at velocities greater than 90 percent the speed of light form along the black hole's spin axis. In the case of Swift J1644+57, one of these jets happened to point straight at Earth.

"The radio emission occurs when the outgoing jet slams into the interstellar environment," Zauderer explained. "By contrast, the X-rays arise much closer to the black hole, likely near the base of the jet."

Theoretical studies of tidally disrupted stars suggested they would appear as flares at optical and ultraviolet energies. The brightness and energy of a black hole's jet is greatly enhanced when viewed head-on. The phenomenon, called relativistic beaming, explains why Swift J1644+57 was seen at X-ray energies and appeared so strikingly luminous.

When first detected March 28, the flares were initially assumed to signal a gamma-ray burst, one of the nearly daily short blasts of high-energy radiation often associated with the death of a massive star and the birth of a black hole in the distant universe. But as the emission continued to brighten and flare, astronomers realized that the most plausible explanation was the tidal disruption of a sun-like star seen as beamed emission.

By March 30, EVLA observations by Zauderer's team showed a brightening radio source centered on a faint galaxy near Swift's position for the X-ray flares. These data provided the first conclusive evidence that the galaxy, the radio source and the Swift event were linked.

"Our observations show that the radio-emitting region is still expanding at more than half the speed of light," said Edo Berger, an associate professor of astrophysics at Harvard and a coauthor of the radio paper. "By tracking this expansion backward in time, we can confirm that the outflow formed at the same time as the Swift X-ray source."
