(AP) ? Federal mediators are entering the stalled NHL labor talks, with the season's first 2? months already lost because of the lockout.

George Cohen, director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, said Monday the parties had agreed to use the agency. He assigned three mediators to assist negotiations ? deputy director Scot Beckenbaugh, director of mediation services John Sweeney and Commissioner Guy Serota ? who was removed later in the day because of a Twitter account that may have been tampered with.

The sides are to meet separately with the mediators Wednesday.

"While we have no particular level of expectation going into this process, we welcome a new approach in trying to reach a resolution of the ongoing labor dispute at the earliest possible date," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said.

Cohen has worked with the players' associations for Major League Baseball, helping end the 1994-95 strike as an outside counsel, and the NBA. He was an adviser to the NHL players' union before joining FMCS three years ago.

"We look forward to their involvement as we continue working to reach an equitable agreement for both the players and the owners," said Donald Fehr, executive director of the NHL Players' Association.

Cohen mediated during the 2010 negotiations in Major League Soccer and 2011 talks in the NFL and NBA, along with this year's dispute between the NFL and its on-field officials.

Cohen said Serota was removed because "within one hour after I issued a press release ... it has been called to my attention that there are issues involving an allegedly hacked Twitter account associated with Commissioner Guy Serota." He said Serota was removed "to immediately dispel any cloud on the mediation process, and without regard to the merits of the allegations."

Hockey players and management have not negotiated since last Wednesday. The NHL has canceled more than one-third of its regular season, including all games through Dec. 14, the New Year's Day outdoor Winter Classic and the All-Star weekend scheduled for Jan. 26-27 at Columbus, Ohio.

"I have had separate, informal discussions with the key representatives of the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players' Association during the course of their negotiations for a successor collective bargaining agreement," Cohen said in a statement.

"Due to the extreme sensitivity of these negotiations and consistent with the FMCS's longstanding practice, the agency will refrain from any public comment concerning the future schedule and/or the status of the negotiations until further notice."

Beckenbaugh was a mediator during the 2004-05 lockout, a stoppage that caused cancellation of the entire season.

Whatever happened to limited government?

The concept of ?limited government? seems to have become a relic of sorts, writes SoldAtTheTop, mocked by one side of the ideological spectrum, paid lip service to by the other but widely discarded overall.

With the latest election, the last four years in particular and the last decade or so in general, the concept of ?limited government? seems to have become a relic of sorts, mocked by one side of the ideological spectrum, paid lip service to by the other but widely discarded overall.

It?s strange that such a basic concept could fall so far out of fashion? as if it has no merit at all? yet most ?reasonable? people must acknowledge that there are ?limits? to what the government can and should do.

By ?reasonable? people, of course, I mean those who accept as valid the overall order of our society which seeks to balance the government ?public interest? with the individual ?private interest? and not those who occupy the extremes of the many philosophies who want nothing more than to radically reorganize everything (?one way or another) from the ground up.?

Late rains, cooler weather save most Tenn. crops

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? With most of the harvest done in Tennessee, farmers are lamenting the loss of corn but say timely rains that began midsummer saved most other crops.

Cotton is expected to finish among the best per-acre yields ever.

Richard Buntin, extension director for the University of Tennessee Extension in Crockett County, said the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated 861 pounds per acre.

"That would be the fourth-largest yield on record," Buntin said.

Tobacco also is strong.

Burley tobacco specialist Dr. Paul Denton, with the University of Tennessee and the University of Kentucky, said the crop was of high quality and average yield.

Denton said the prices leaf is commanding are approaching those seen before the 2004 tobacco buyout. And while floor sales quickly reflect demand, Denton said at least one tobacco company that contracts for leaf is rewriting agreements with producers to pay them more.

He explained that the burley crop fared much better than corn during a summer drought because of a fundamental difference between the crops.

"You're growing leaves, not seeds," Denton said of tobacco.

Still, he was amazed by how well burley rebounded from a deep drought in June.

Soybeans also rebounded after the rain began falling in July.

Willis Jepson and his father, William, farm about 4,000 acres around Portland near the Kentucky line. The younger Jepson said he got a soybean yield of 55 bushels per acre. The crop usually makes around 40 bushels an acre on his land.

The corn was another story. Jepson said his yield of about 50 bushels per acre was a pale shadow of usual production, around 150 bushels an acre.

The crops were insured, but he said "we'd a lot rather have a crop to sell than collect insurance."

It costs the Jepsons about $600 per acre to plant corn, and a yield of 100 bushels per acre is the break-even point.

The farm lost about $500,000 on the corn, which was their largest acreage.

Tom Womack, a spokesman for the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, said the corn crop in Tennessee was the lowest in 20 years. He also said how well farmers fared depended a lot on where their fields were.

"There are a number of farmers in northwest Tennessee that never did recover from the drought," Womack said.

Cooler temperatures and timely rainfall in the latter half of summer also is helping livestock producers by keeping pastures in decent condition, Womack said.

"Livestock farmers aren't having to feed (hay) as much this year as they sometimes do," he said.

Other crops struggled with an April freeze and then a late spring drought. Womack said the loss in berries ranges from partial to complete, but irrigated berry crops fared better. Apples were somewhat smaller than usual, but also sweeter.

The freeze brought an unusual event in the vineyards ? a secondary blooming.

"At harvest, some varieties had two crops on one vine," Womack said.

Growing Home: Baby Update and Natural Remedies for a ...

To give you a little update on baby first, here he/she is at 19 weeks old!

As most of you know, I was diagnosed with a very large subchorionic hematoma quite early in this pregnancy. Simply put, I had a blood clot (three times larger then our baby) between my placenta and the lining of my uterus. We were told we had a 1 in 3 chance of miscarrying for the second time.?

After many ultrasounds, many trips to the ER, and too many times where I broke down into tears because I "knew for sure" we were losing our baby, we are half way through this pregnancy. We are so thankful for God's sustaining grace thus far and all the help we've received from our family, friends, and church so I could be on modified bed-rest.

Last week, things got a little more complicated as an emergency ultrasound showed that the original blood clot had not shrunk in size at all. In addition, I have developed two more clots which cause heavy bleeding, even in the middle of the night while I'm resting.?

Second-trimester bleeding puts me at "high-risk" and I am no longer allowed to consult with my midwife alone. We now have and OB in addition to our midwife, and our hopes for another home-birth are put on hold unless something?drastically?improves.?

"Modified bed-rest" has been changed to "strict bed-rest." With the exception of getting up to eat, shower, and use the bathroom, I spend most of the day lying down or crocheting. As you can imagine, it's very difficult with two toddlers running around. :-) Lord willing, we will be moving in with ?family who have graciously opened up their home to us for as long as we need it sometime this week or next.?

We're often asked what's causing these blood clots and how I can get rid of them. The truth is, not one single doctor of the many we have met with over the past few months can explain why they develop or how to prevent them. No one has prescribe any medication to help the clots dissolve, so we've being using the herbs and homeopathic remedies our midwife has suggested to help sustain the pregnancy. Here they are (and what they do) in case you find yourself in the same situation:

Pregnancy Vitamin: I take this with all of my pregnancies, for the baby's health as well as my own. Make sure the folic acid content is at least 1mg daily, and that the iron is taken in a?separate?pill from the calcium. Calcium inhibits iron absorption.?

Arnica: I take 15 arnica pellets a day. It is a homeopathic remedy that aids in the healing of bruises and wounds. I take it to control the growth of the clots, and hopefully, to shrink them as well.

Sepia (Inky Juice): These past few months have been a whirlwind of emotions. One minute we think we're losing another child, and the next we're happily staring at our energetic little babe on the ultrasound screen. I take 15 pellets of Sepia a day to help with the morning sickness, headaches, weariness, and emotional exhaustion.?

Later on in the pregnancy (Lord willing, there will be a "later"), I plan on drinking Red Raspberry Tea to help prepare my uterus for birth. I took it with our second child and noticed a huge difference between my labor with him and our first. ?

Evening Primrose Oil is something else I take near the end of a pregnancy to help soften the cervix. After an hour and a half of pushing and second degree tear with our first, I was willing to try anything to prevent it from happening again! It worked wonders with our second - no tearing at all, and he literally "slipped" out in three pushes!?

The Arnica and Red Raspberry Tea are available through The Bulk Herb Store. I love this family run company and its commitment to providing quality, organic, herbs, teas, and information on how to use the natural medicines God has created for us!

North Cyprus Law | Is Fraud a Criminal Offence in the TRNC?

North Cyprus Law | Is Fraud a Criminal Offence in the TRNC?Qu. What is the legal definition Fraud? Is Fraud also a Criminal Offence in the TRNC?

According to the Civil Wrong Law in the TRNC the definition of fraud is as follows;

??Fraud consists of a false representation of fact, made with the knowledge that it is false, or without belief in its truth or recklessly, careless whether it be true or false, with intent that it shall be acted upon by the person deceived:

Provided that no action shall be brought in respect of any such representation unless it was intended to and did deceive the plaintiff and he has acted upon it and he has thereby suffered damage:

Provided also that no action shall be brought in respect of any such representation as to the character, conduct, credit, ability, trade or dealings of any person in order to obtain him credit, money or goods unless such representation is in writing and signed by the defendant himself. ?

The Criminal Code of the TRNC defines some similar (but not exactly the same) actions like false pretence, cheating and forgery with a different wording and narrower elements than the civil act. In Criminal cases or Criminal Law you would realise that every situation would be dealt with under separate articles depending on its circumstances or how the offence was committed. At this point ? must add that the major difference in Criminal cases from Civil cases regarding this subject is that Criminal cases, where inter alia the Criminal code would be used, do not offer compensation etc to the complainant (deceived) and, if found guilty beyond reasonable doubt, the accused would be punished with a fine or imprisonment whereas in Civil cases, where inter alia the Civil Wrong Law would be used, the plaintiff (deceived) would gain compensation etc if he/she proves his case by the balance of probabilities, but the defendant wouldn?t be imprisoned unless he fails to comply with a court order.

As you can see from what I have written above fraud can be a criminal offence according to the criminal code of the TRNC but fraud in Criminal Law isn?t as general and is more specific. It would change from case to case in other words every case depends on its own merits. Therefore I can only say its a criminal offence if I know all the relevant facts of the case. Below I have put down a crime according to the Criminal Code of the TRNC which would interest most people.

??Any person who, being a seller or mortgagor of any property, or being the advocate or agent of any such seller or mortgagor, with intent to induce the purchaser or mortgagee to accept the title offered or produced to him, and with intent to defraud-

a) Conceals from the purchaser or mortgagee any instrument material to the title, or any incumbrance; or

b) Falsifies any false statement as to the title offered or may depend; or

c) Makes any false statement as to the title depends or conceals any fact material thereto,

is guilty of a misdemeanour, and is liable to imprisonment.??

Argentina still seeking an out from debt showdown

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina ? Argentina is refusing to give up its fight against bond holdouts who want payment in full plus interest for defaulted debt that most other bondholders accepted steep discounts on as the country climbed out of its historic economic crisis.

Argentina argues in a filing made just before Friday's midnight New York deadline that its money is immune from U.S. judgments. It says it won't pay despite losing on appeal last month.

Instead, it wants the full appellate court to overturn a smaller panel of its own judges, arguing that trillions of dollars in debt issued by governments around the world is at stake.

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez has vowed never to pay billionaire Paul Singer's NML Capital Ltd.

NML said this week that Argentina owes it $1.45 billion.

Soap Deli News: A Scrapbooking Magazine Feature for one of my ...

| |

My DIY Washi Tape Stash Tin Project that I blogged about in August, was featured in the October 2012 issue of the UK Magazine, Scrap365. This news is a little late, but I only just found out myself when I received a parcel in the mail today from England. I knew it was coming, I just didn't know when. If you missed this DIY project you can find it here.

Speaking of magazines, the December issue of Whole Living Magazine has a scrumptious recipe for making Spiced Hot Chocolate. Simply combine 1 cup of almond milk, 1/2 cinnamon stick, a bit of grated nutmeg, and a pinch of cayenne in a sauce pan. Bring to a simmer, then remove from heat and allow to steep for 10 minutes. Once your spiced almond milk has steeped, whip in 1/4 cup (or 1oz.) of your favorite chopped dark chocolate and enjoy. The same issue also contains some interesting drink recipes for creating festive cocktails using Prosecco - a sparkling Italian white wine.

And of course, being the tea lover that I am, all this talk of beverages has me in the mind to buy a whole slew of spices in bulk from Mountain Rose Herbs to create chai tea mix blends to gift for the holidays.

Also today, you can grab the ebook, Holiday Cookies: 14 New and Delicious Cookie Recipes (including one for Fido), at no cost for a limited time. It includes information on cooking cookie basics - hey, we can't all be pros - and recipes for moon cookies, thumbprint cookies, molasses cookies, peppermint swirls, chocolate chunk cherry cookies, reindeer pellets, homemade dog treats and more!

Will you be making gifts for your friends and family this year?

?Oskar?s First Toys? wins Friskies? best cat video award

Mick Szydlowski receives the cat video of the year award (Friskies)The first-ever cat video awards were held in Los Angeles on Wednesday, with thousands of proud cat owners competing for the coveted grand prize.

"Do cats know about their celebrity today?" asked host and comedian Michael Buckley. "And more importantly, do they care?"

That's debatable. But what's unquestionable is the human enthusiasm for cat videos, which have become the third-most-searched items on YouTube.

More than 1,400 videos were submitted to the Friskies awards this year. A panel of judges and online voters narrowed the selection to 12 finalists in four categories.

And to honor the finalists, Friskies brought out a roster of cat-world celebrities to entertain a live audience both in person and over the Web. The festivities included a professional ballet dancer and violinist performing an ode to the Nyan Cat, an a cappella choir performing all "meow" renditions of classic songs, the creator of the Henri Le Chat Noir videos and Animal Planet's "Must Love Cats" host John Fulton singing acoustic cat songs that included lines such as, "The Internet was made for kittens, the Internet was made for cats and I don't have a problem with that."

A professional ballet dancer performs an ode to "Nyan Cat" (Friskies)

But there were plenty of touching moments as well.

Most important, Friskies announced it had donated 250,000 cans of cat food to 25 animal shelters across the country to help celebrate the awards show.

And the winner of the first-ever Friskies award was Mick Szydlowski for his video, "Oskar's First Toys." Oskar is a cat born without eyes, and Mick and his girlfriend, Bethany, captured video of the newborn cat playing with a toy ball.

Szydlowski received a year's supply of cat food and a check for $15,000, which he says will be used to buy toys for Oskar and to help pay for their upcoming move from Omaha, Neb., to Seattle.

"It's an incredible feeling," Szydlowski told Yahoo News. "Cats deserve a show like this. And Oskar deserves some of the winnings, maybe all of the winnings.

"Oskar is completely blind, but he doesn't let that slow him down one bit," Szydlowski said. "He's healthy, he's happy, he does everything a regular cat would do."

Szydlowski says he hopes all the attention his Oskar videos have received will help convince people that cats with disabilities can still make great pets. "A lot of people assume it's a death sentence, which is not the case," he said.

Other "catuette" winners each received a year's supply of Friskies and $2,500:

??????? Catness: "Black Cat Stick 'em Up" starring Cole; Tampa, Fla.

??????? Catcom: "Cat Alarm Clock" starring Boo; Elkhart, Ind.

??????? Catventure: "Cardboard Dreams" starring Milo, Otis, Barrett and Bates; Plano, Texas

??????? Catchall: "Kitty Plays Fetch" starring Nylah; Cherry Hill, N.J.

This is a separation of church and state blog with an atheist slant and pro-religious education stance.? I like critical thinking, logic (hence the name), and not letting people get away with either stupid ideas or ideas that get played out in public but only serve the people making them.? With the presidential election just a day a away, I am (like everyone else) looking forward to not being so inundated with all things politics.? I will continue to post about politics and religion, but barring from something really weird going down with the election, I will be more than happy to take a break from adding fuel to the big fire of this presidential election.

But it?s not over yet.? With the exception of one or two posts I have cooking, I am preparing myself to mostly be posting about this election for the next 24-48 hours.? My friends and I are making Obama t-shirts tonight (I will post a picture of mine later), I?m reading the news regularly and anything that grabs my eye I will probably post about (like last night), and whatever the results are I?m sure I?ll have an opinionated post about.? This post however is more of a last attempt to not have any readers I have to vote for Romney.? I?ve had several posts on why he shouldn?t be president where I?ve referenced other news sites saying the same thing.? This one is pure opinion.

A good friend of mine?has now resorted to?taking votes away from Romney as opposed to getting people to vote Obama.? It stemmed from a somewhat humorous story involving a family member sending a mass email out about his mathematical based prediction (guess) on how Romney will win by a landslide.? Instead of criticizing the math or once again pleading to his family to not vote Romney (as my friend is gay and doesn?t want his family supporting a possible president who doesn?t support him), my friend merely corrected his family member on the name he used for the projected new president (Mitchell Romney) by saying, ?Mitt is not short for Mitchell.?? This spared a humorous conversation about how we should all convince?all Romney supporters?to ONLY vote for Romney by his ?full name?, so if you don?t see ?Mitchell Romney? be sure to ignore any other Romneys on the ballot and write in ?Mitchell Romney?.?

?Mitchell Romney? aside, I have jumped on my friends band wagon and am pleading with you to vote for preferably Obama, but anyone but Romney.? It doesn?t matter that he?s still probably more middle of the road than he?s campaigned.? It doesn?t matter if you don?t like the way the economy has gone the past 4 years (hello!? Republicans cocked blocked Obama several times from solutions AND Colin Powell has said that neither party superhero Reagan or Clinton could have fixed the debt better than Obama has).? What matters is that we don?t go backwards.? Do you love a woman?? Don?t vote against her.? Do you respect man or woman who happens to be homosexual?? Do not vote against them.? Do you enjoy religious freedoms (both the right to practice freely or to not practice at all)?? Do not vote against them.? Do you think Mormonism borders on being a cult?? Do not vote for a Mormon.? Do you know anyone living in poverty or the?ever?decreasing middle class?? Do not vote Republican (they save people in higher tax brackets and convince people in lower tax brackets to vote for them based on religious faith.? That is a fact).? I?m not convinced Romney would be able to overturn Roe v Wade, Obamacare (ummm, he had Obamacare in Massachusetts), or stop individual states from legally acknowledging?gay?marriages in the?next 4 years as the presidency is not a dictatorship.???However,?a vote for Romney is a vote for not caring if we move forward as a country.? Most other developed countries in the world does not have religious superstitions cater to their government, have more progressive social norms, and universal health care.? America is embarrassingly left behind.? In fact, the rest of the world would overwhelmingly vote for Obama if included in the election and everyday a new poll shows that.? This leads to me a somewhat obvious plea?for not being an ugly American for other countries to continue to mock.

I?m all about voting for things other than social norms as they sometimes can be more smoke in mirrors and can detract from other serious issues in politics.? But with this election allegedly being as close as it seems and so many people?s rights riding on it-symbolic or actual-it is incredibly important to not vote for anyone who would hold us back.? Do no betray anyone you care about by voting for a man who will take away their rights, happiness, and safety (yes safety, as the more gay people are not considered equals the more hate crimes towards them will be tolerated, as well as if abortion was made illegal women would still get them but through unsafe means).? If you?re religious, do as JESUS would do and not what your church may say and help the poor, the sick, and the ones not as accepted by society.? Obama at least seems to take every one?s plights into consideration; Romney does not.?

This is too close for comfort so I must beg of people to not vote for Romney.? Maybe the next election I won?t be begging for you to cock block the guy I?m not voting for from winning.? I don?t know what the landscape will be in four years.? If you agree with any of this, share it on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, wherever in hopes of persuading the undecided.? At this point if you don?t like Obama, fine.? Don?t vote for him.? But?please vote?for any of the other 3rd parties, including the one Roseanne Barr is on (seriously?).? Let?s continue to move forward and not go back to a more articulate version of George W.? So if you haven?t already done early voting, please vote for anyone but Romney?or write in ?Mitchell Romney?.?

Please and thanks.?

PS- More reasons why Romney sucks here,, here, here, AND here!

Jordan: 1 gunman killed in police station attacks

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? Gunmen attacked two police stations in Jordan Wednesday as demonstrators threw rocks and denounced their king over price hikes in a rare spike of violence.

One attacker was killed in the assaults, the first fatality in demonstrations in the kingdom this year. Thirteen police officers were among 17 seriously wounded in the attack in Jordan's north, police said. A police corporal was critically wounded in the second.

Two days of angry protests have threatened to plunge the U.S.-allied kingdom into a wave of unrest.

So far, King Abdullah II has steered his nation clear of the Arab Spring that has swept across the region, toppling the rulers of Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen along the way. But Jordan's massive budget deficit and other economic woes could increasingly push the population into the opposition camp.

The motive of the bloody attack on the police station in the town of Wasatiyeh, on the western edge of the city of Irbid near the Syrian border, was not immediately clear, and authorities were investigating, a police official said on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to make press statements.

A Wasatiyeh resident identified the dead gunman as Qais Omari, 22, an activist with Jordanian youth movements taking part in the protests. The resident insisted on anonymity for fear of police retribution.

Gunmen staged another armed attack on a police station in the capital, Amman. The police official said gunmen sprayed the building from a moving car in Shafa Badran district, critically wounding a police corporal who was shot in the eye. He said the vehicle sped off as the attackers fired automatic weapons at cars in the street.

Tensions rose late Tuesday after the government raised prices for cooking and heating gas by 54 percent to rein in a bulging budget deficit and secure a $2 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund. Minutes after state television announced the hike, several thousand Jordanians poured into the streets across the country, pelting police with stones, torching government offices and private cars and chanting slogans against the king.

"I like the king, but so what?" asked 29-yead-old civil servant Daoud Shorfat, one of some 300 protesters in central Amman on Wednesday who police dispersed with tear gas and water cannons. "He can't feel our pain. ... He is watching the government raising the prices, while the people are barely able to feed their hungry children."

Violent demonstrations broke out across the rest of the country Wednesday as well, hitting all 12 of Jordan's governorates, police said. Protesters burned tires to block traffic, torched police and private cars and at least 20 government offices, including court buildings. Police said at least 120 people were arrested nationwide.

In the northwestern city of Salt, tens of protesters unsuccessfully tried storm the residence of the Jordanian prime minister, while in the southern city of Maan, demonstrators fired in the air to force riot police out of town, wounding one officer, police said in a statement.

Some 2,000 protesters in the city of Karak shouted "Down, down with you, Abdullah," and "Get out and leave us alone" as they marched through the town, shattering shop windows, eyewitnesses and police said.

Jordan has been hit by frequent but small anti-government protests over the past 23 months, but these demonstrations have shifted the focus from the government squarely to the king.

The leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, Jordan's most powerful opposition group, called the protests "a wakeup call to the king to avoid a replica of the violence in Egypt and Tunisia."

"The street is seething with anger and an explosion is coming," the Brotherhood's Zaki Bani Irsheid said. "We want to create a Jordanian Spring with a local flavor ? meaning reforms in the system while keeping our protests peaceful."

The riots are reminiscent of those in 1988 and 1996 over similar hikes on the price of bread and other food commodities under Abdullah's late father, King Hussein. Hussein was forced to introduce swift reforms that ushered in Jordan's first parliamentary elections in 22 years, an end to martial law and the renewal of a multiparty system that had been banned for decades.

Jordanian political commentator Osama al-Sharif said the new wave of protests pose a "serious challenge, probably the most crucial since he (Abdullah) became king" in 1999.

The 50-year-old king has been fighting off a host of domestic challenges, including a Muslim Brotherhood boycott of parliamentary elections, increasing opposition from his traditional Bedouin allies and an inability to keep the Syrian civil war from spilling over his border.

So far, Abdullah has largely maintained control, partly by relinquishing some of his powers to parliament and amending the country's 60-year-old constitution. His Western-trained security forces have been able to keep protests from getting out of hand. And most in the opposition remain loyal to the king, pressing for reforms but not his removal.

But as the pressure has mounted, Abdullah has been forced to make concessions. He has surrendered some of his absolute powers to an elected parliament, and renounced his right to appoint the prime minister, saying lawmakers will select the premier following Jan. 23 national elections.

The country's economic woes have added to the crush of challenges, and they show no sign of easing.

Jordan's budget deficit is expected to reach a year end record of $3 billion, while foreign debt is expected to jump 27 percent to $27 billion this year as the country grapples with rising poverty, unemployment and inflation.

Donations promised by Saudi Arabia and other oil producing Arab nations ? a badly needed cash infusion for resource-barren Jordan ? have failed to materialize, while the cost of sheltering some 265,000 Syrian refugees who have fled their civil war has put further strain on Jordan's already meager water, fuel and electricity resources and health care system.

On top of that, disruptions in cheap Egyptian gas shipments cost Jordan an extra $7 million a day, the government said. The pipeline that transports the natural gas has been blown up more than a dozen times over the past year by militants in Egypt's Sinai desert, halting shipments. Jordan has switched to more expensive fuel oil to generate electricity.

Despite the challenges, Abdullah is expected to ride out the latest wave of protests, which are confined to certain areas in the country and have attracted relatively small numbers so far.

The stakes are high: Abdullah is a close ally of the United States and has been at the forefront of its global war on terrorism, including in Afghanistan. Jordan serves as a buffer zone to Saudi Arabia, another Sunni Muslim country, and to Israel, under a peace treaty signed in 1994, and Iraq. The kingdom hosts the largest Palestinian population outside the West Bank and Gaza.

"Washington's goal is to preserve the status quo, whereby Jordan is a "safe zone" in a sea of unrest," said a report by the Washington-based Middle East Research and Information project.

Here?s How Samsung Can Hurt Apple Some More

If Samsung were to raise the price of mobile processors it supplies to Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), the iPhone maker could see a drop in its overall margins by as much as 2 percentage points. The observation was made by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, who was prompted into the analysis by a news report earlier in the week that said Samsung had already increased chip price for Apple by about 20 percent.

Munster wrote in a note to investors on Wednesday that he would not be surprised by the price increase, ?given the legal tension? between the two companies. But since the processors are a core component of the iPhone and iPad, Munster calculated a 20 percent increase in prices would hit Apple?s margins between 1 and 2 percentage points. The chips represent between 6 percent and 9 percent of the total component cost of an iOS device, Apple Insider said.

Our 20-page proprietary analysis of Apple?s stock is ready. Click here and to get your Cheat Sheet report now!

While Apple currently has no choice but to continue its partnership with the Korean company, Munster said an eventual move to an alternative supplier such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (NYSE:TSM) was likely. ?We believe that if Apple were to move to another vendor in the next year or two, they may be able to negotiate better chip prices, which would roll back the impact from the Samsung price increase,? he said.

The analyst added that while overall margins were likely to drop for Apple in the December quarter because of the several product introductions, they will ultimately improve to reach levels of 41.5 percent for calendar years 2013 and 2014.??It does not appear that new product launches for iPhone 5 and iPad mini carry significantly different margins than prior launch margins for the same product lines,? Munster wrote.

Notes on the end (of the year) ? Talk to St. Ambrose

by andrewansel

We?heard little about the social or ?nonprofit? sector during election season, but a deal to avert the so-called ?fiscal cliff? is sure to have tangible impacts on charitable organizations in 2013. Questions going forward:?How might?proposed limits to charitable deductions impact philanthropic giving? How?might?cuts to domestic spending trickle down to ground-level, organizational budgets? How will nonprofits respond during and after the debate? This Nonprofit Quarterly article provides a thorough description of the nonprofit policy challenges during the next year and is worth a glance?

One takeaway from the ?challenges? article: despite the ?nonprofit? moniker, 501(C)(3) organizations are economic engines and need to do a better job of pointing that out. St. Ambrose Housing Aid Center employs 40 people who earn real money, and real benefits for the work they put in to St. Ambrose?s?services and programs. Nobody runs on good feelings alone; at the end of the day?St. Ambrose?employees have families to feed, bills to pay, and things to buy just like everyone else.

Don?t fall prey to a misconception; nonprofit organizations are not run by volunteers. Independent Sector, a nonprofit and philanthropic advocacy organization, estimates that 13.5 million nonprofit employees, 10% of the nation?s workforce, were paid $668 billion in wages and benefits in 2009. With more workers than the finance, insurance and real estate industries combined, we are a significant part of the economic food chain.

An organization?s resources come from varied sources.? For example, St. Ambrose earns income through the sale of renovated homes; foundation grants and government contracts are tied to specific programs and outcomes. Most importantly, we have a growing group of dedicated donors who believe in our mission and think we are doing a good job at achieving it. What better way to?express?your vote of confidence in a favorite charity, than by donating online to one today?
